Special Enrollment Support
Staff at the LISD Welcome Center can provide in-person support for the following situations that require special review or documentation for enrollment:
Residency Affidavit (this can also often be completed at your child's campus - contact the campus registrar)
All students must provide a gas, water, or electric bill as proof of residency for enrollment. If the parent or guardian lives with another adult and does not have these bills in his/her name, we can complete a notarized Residency Affidavit to meet this requirement. Both the parent/guardian and the resident must come in person together. Both must provide a current government issued photo ID and a copy of a recent gas, water, or electric bill. This enrollment is still done by the child's parent or legal guardian, not the resident with whom they are living.Grandparent Care Affidavit
State law and Board policy allow enrollment of students who reside outside the district if ALL the following requirements are met: A grandparent resides in the district, the grandparent provides after school care a minimum of four hours or more a day, at least four days a week. Both the grandparent and the parent/guardian must come in person together. Both must provide a current government issued photo ID and a copy of a recent gas, water, or electric bill at BOTH the parent's and grandparent's addresses.Enrollment at the campus zoned to the grandparent's address may be requested but, is not guaranteed and the student may need to be enrolled at a different campus if space is not available. A parent cannot request enrollment at a campus other than the zoned campus for the grandparent's address under this policy. Requests for other schools would require an out of district transfer request. This enrollment is still done by the child's parent or legal guardian, not the grandparent.
Minor Living Apart Affidavit
State law and Board policy allow enrollment of students who are living separate and apart from their parents/legal guardians full-time when the student is residing inside the district and the parents are residing outside the district. The parent/guardian and person with whom the student is residing must come in person together. Both must provide a current government issued photo ID and a copy of 1) a recent gas, water, or electric bill for the address where the student is residing AND 2) a recent gas, water, or electric bill for the address where the parent/guardian is residing. This enrollment is still done by the child's parent or legal guardian, not the resident with whom they are living.Authorization Agreement
This is an official State of Texas affidavit and is NOT a LISD document. It allows a parent to designate another adult as having significant decision-making and care rights for their child, including enrollment and other educational decisions. We can provide a copy of this document and the required notarization service. However, we cannot provide any legal guidance or advice to parents considering signing this document. Parents are responsible for determining if they need to seek legal guidance before signing. Both the parent and the designated adult caregiver must come in person together. Both must provide a current government issued photo ID and a copy of a recent gas, water, or electric bill at the caregiver's address. In loco parentis Enrollment
If a non-parent/guardian adult has possession of a child and is acting in the parental role in the absence of the child's parent or legal guardian, we can provide support to ensure that the student can be promptly enrolled in school. This is only done when the parent is completely inaccessible/unable to sign other paperwork granting authority to a caregiver (EX: deceased, incarcerated, medically incapacitated, etc.)Review of custody or other legal documents
Most custody paperwork or other enrollment documents can be reviewed at your child's campus so you should contact the campus registrar first. Should there be a concern about enrollment or custody documentation, we can provide assistance.
