Free, State-Funded PreK

LISD serves PreK eligible 4-year-old students in free, full-day state-funded prekindergarten classes. Students must be four years old on/before September 1 of the enrolling school year AND meet one of the PreK and eligibilities listed below. LISD does not enroll children who are three on/before September 1 into PreK.

Students must qualify for full-day, state-funded prekindergarten by one of the following criteria:

• Learning English as a second language
• Income
• Foster
• Homeless
• Dependent of a member of the military on active duty, injured or killed while on active duty
• Dependent of an individual who received the Star of Texas Award

How do I know what campus my PreK child would attend?

Find the 2025–26 campus with prekindergarten that you are zoned for HERE based on your zoned elementary campus.

If you do not know your zoned elementary campus, use the 2025-26 school locator to identify your zoned elementary school.

How do I enroll my child in PreK?

If your child is eligible for state-funded PreK, you can complete the NEW STUDENT ENROLLMENT process in Skyward. The 2025-26 New Student Online Enrollment forms opened Feb. 4, 2025 and verifying PreK eligibility can begin April 1, 2025. Once Skyward online enrollment forms are submitted, the campus clerk will reach out to you for next steps and can assist with any enrollment questions or concerns. When can my child be qualified for PreK? 

The state allows districts to begin verifying PreK eligibility for the upcoming school year starting on April 1. While you are able to submit your online new student enrollment forms to LISD starting in February, your child's PreK eligibility cannot be determined until April 1 for the upcoming school year's enrollment. The April 1 date is set by TEA.

Does LISD provide bus transportation for PreK?

No, bus transportation is not provided for prekindergarten students.

Discovery Academy

Tuition options in PreK are available in Discovery Academy for three and four-year-old children who live in the community, are PreK eligible or are the child or grandchild of a LISD employee. Discovery Academy provides a caring, prekindergarten learning experience with certified teachers and standards-based instruction that is focused on nurturing the whole child. Tuition includes extended before and after school hours, additional days when the class is open, in addition to the LISD Academic Calendar, an enriched STEM curriculum and a late afternoon snack.
