    Serving 45,000 meals per day, on average, is no easy task - but our passion for what we do makes even the most difficult feats seem possible.     The National School Lunch Program

    Lewisville ISD is part of The National School Lunch Program (NSLP), which is a federally assisted meal program operating in public schools. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or no-cost lunches to children each school day. NSLP institutions must serve lunches that meet Federal meal pattern requirements and offer the lunches at a free or reduced-price to eligible children. Nutritionally compliant snacks may also be served to children who participate in an approved afterschool program including an educational or enrichment activity.

    Reimbursable Lunch

     

    What Makes a Complete Lunch?

    Students are offered 5 meal components:

    1. Fruit

    2. Vegetable

    3. Grain

    4. Meat/Meat Alternate

    5. Milk

    Students must take at least 3 of the 5 components offered and one of those must be a fruit or vegetable.

    Most entrees on the menu comprise the grain and meat/meat alternate components (i.e. Hamburger) or are menued with a grain component (i.e. Chicken Caesar Salad with Whole Grain Roll).

     

    The School Breakfast Program

    Lewisville ISD is part of the School Breakfast Program (SBP), which is a federally assisted meal program operating in public schools. Similar to the NSLP, it provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or no-cost breakfasts to children each school day. School districts that participate in the Program must serve breakfast meals that meet Federal nutrition requirements and offer free or reduced-price breakfasts to all eligible children.

    What Makes a Complete Breakfast?

    Students are offered 4 meal components:

    1. Fruit or 100% Fruit Juice

    2. Grain

    3. Meat/Meat Alternate

    4. Milk

    Students must take at least 3 of the 4 meal components and one of those must be a fruit or 100% fruit juice.

    Similar to lunch, most of the entrees comprise the meat/meat alternate and grain components (i.e. Egg & Sausage Breakfast Taco) or are menued with a grain component (i.e. Cheesy Scrambled Eggs with Whole Grain Toast).

     

    Smart Snacks in Schools

    Lewisville ISD follows Smart Snacks in Schools regulations for all a la carte food and drink items sold during the school day. These are national nutrition guidelines that are not already covered by the school lunch (NSLP) and breakfast programs (SBP). These science-based nutrition standards encourage children to make healthier snack choices and apply to all foods sold a la carte in the cafeteria, in school stores, snack bars, and vending machines.

    For food items, Smart Snack guidelines require the item to:

    • Be a whole grain-rich product; and/or
    • Have the first ingredient be a fruit, vegetable, low-fat dairy or protein food
    • Be a combination food that contains at least a ¼ cup of fruit and/or vegetable
    • Contain 10% of the Daily Value for calcium, potassium, vitamin D, or dietary fiber
    • Meet strict calorie, sodium, fat and sugar limits

    For beverage items, Smart Snack guidelines require the item to:

    • Be unflavored or flavored fat-free or low-fat milk and milk alternatives
    • Be 100% fruit or vegetable juice

    High Schools may sell additional “no calorie” or “lower calorie” beverage options, including caffeinated beverages with strict calorie limits.
