Advanced Placement (AP)

  • Any student interested in engaging in college-level courses while in high school is invited to participate in Advanced Placement (AP) courses offered at all LISD high school campuses.

The AP program was created by the College Board in 1955 to provide students with a pathway to earn college credit while in high school.  AP courses are rigorous, college-level courses that align with the Texas Education Agency Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and the College Board standards and skills.

AP courses give students access to challenging, college-level work, but with the support of high school teachers and peers.  Students build confidence and learn essential time management and study skills needed for college and career success.  Students have the opportunity to dig deeper into subjects that interest them, develop advanced research and communication skills, and learn to tap their creativity and problem-solving and analytical skills to address course challenges.  AP students learn what will be expected for them in college.

Students may demonstrate readiness for college (CCMR) by taking any subject area AP exam in May and scoring a 3 or higher.  Depending on the college or university, students may also earn college credit and/or placement into advanced courses in college with exam scores.  The College Board Exam Review provides additional information about the exam process.
