  • Govil

    1. Maanya Govil

What university/college are you attending in the fall?
    Stanford University

What do you plan to major in, and what are your career plans?
I plan to major in mechanical engineering on a biomechanical engineering track. I plan to pursue prosthetic design and research, specifically in bionics and myoelectric prosthetics.

What teacher impacted you the most and how/why?
Mrs. Sonya Smith, my 9th-grade AP Biology teacher, was one of the first teachers I had in high school, when everything was online. She went above and beyond to make sure our first experience with high school was entertaining, interesting, and motivating. The enthusiasm with which she lectured, her openness to questions, and her constant, supportive feedback spurred interests and curiosities I’ll carry for years to come. Mrs. Smith is the epitome of how inspiring a teacher can be, not only fostering in me a love for biology and STEM, but also for teaching as a whole. While I tutor AP Bio, I hear her lectures in my head, as clear as they were years ago when I first attended them, and I hope I can carry her energy into every interaction I have. I love going back and talking to her about anything and everything, from genetic mutations to phylogenetic histories, and I’m so grateful to have a teacher with whom to freely debate the logistics behind crazy sci-fi theories.

What are your favorite memories of school?
Some of my favorite memories during my high school journey happened outside the Flower Mound campus. Sunset pizzas on hotel roofs while at TSA States, late-night cram sessions before AcDec competitions, frantic screaming after clutch wins at robotics, it’s the moments I spend with my teams that I remember the fondest, seeing my hard work come to fruition surrounded by the people who made it possible.

In the years to come, how do you hope history remembers the class of 2024?
I hope history remembers our tenacity. The Class of 2024 had a tumultuous start to our high school careers, separated through screens. Yet, just like a phoenix, we’ve persevered, rising out of the ashes of virtual school, and I’m so proud of everything our class has accomplished thus far. I’m ecstatic to see what boundaries we continue to push, tirelessly embracing our determination and persistence.

    Cole

    2. Owen Cole

What university/college are you attending in the fall?
    University of Texas at Austin

What do you plan to major in, and what are your career plans?
Biochemistry, I plan to go into the medical field.

What teacher impacted you the most and how/why?
Mrs. Rachel Baker, AP US History. There are three certainties in life: death, taxes, and Mrs. Baker having a smile on her face when you enter the class. No matter what I was dealing with, Mrs. Baker was always there to offer her support to help me through it."

What are your favorite memories of school?
It's probably cliche to say, but my favorite memories center around the small things. Looking back, what I'm going to miss most is the day-to-day things like getting to run with my teammates in the mornings, having stupid debates at lunch, and even just aimlessly scrolling through TikTok with friends during study hall.

In the years to come, how do you hope history remembers the Class of 2024?
I hope history remembers us as the class that survived COVID. We went into our freshmen years after unprecedented shutdowns, and never let that slow us down. It may have taken a while to adjust to our new version of high school, but we faced it head on. Now, we are heading into the next chapters of our lives, all the stronger for what we endured.

    Park

    3. Alexander Park

What university/college are you attending in the fall?
    Washington University in St. Louis

What do you plan to major in, and what are your career plans?
    Biochemistry on the pre-med track.

What teacher impacted you the most and how/why?
Amanda Killough (AP Human Geography) because this was the first class that truly taught me how to study and keep up with my work. I wouldn't have the time management skills I have now without taking her class.

What are your favorite memories of school?
My favorite memories were any and all events that took place on campus outside of school hours. From watching our team play on the football field to watching the musical in the auditorium, there were many opportunities for me to see and support my friends even if I didn't have any classes with them at the time.

In the years to come, how do you hope history remembers the Class of 2024?
I hope people remember the Class of 2024 as an outgoing class. Starting freshman year with COVID-19, building a social network was particularly difficult, but I think we did an excellent job of doubling down and getting to know the people in classes above and below us.

    Burlacu

    4. Christian Burlacu

What university/college are you attending in the fall?
    University of Texas at Austin

What do you plan to major in, and what are your career plans?
Business honors, and then going into consulting or law.

What teacher impacted you the most and how/why?
Mrs. Susan Harper, Pre-AP English I. She was my first ever teacher I had in high school, and coming in as a freshman during remote learning, Mrs. Harper immediately created a welcoming environment that helped create a sense of familiarity in a time of great change. Mrs. Harper’s dedication, not just to teaching but to her students, can be seen by anyone, and she was a guiding figure as I progressed through high school. Throughout the past four years, she has encouraged me and created countless opportunities for me, inspiring my growth both as a student and person.

What are your favorite memories of school?
Some of my fondest memories come from tennis practice, whether it was under the blazing sun of preseason or the late nights with someone invariably taking forever in their match as I joked around with my friends T and P. Lunch times, as simple as they seem, were also some of the most relaxing and laughter-inducing moments, getting to see my friends and enjoying a fleeting thirty minutes of conversation far-removed from school.

In the years to come, how do you hope history remembers the Class of 2024?
I hope that the Class of 2024 will be remembered as a group always standing together, always willing to be there for one another. More than just a graduating class, we are a family, and I feel that the diversity of talent, whether in the classroom or on the field or anywhere else, makes us a unique group capable of changing the world.

    Shanmuga

    5. Sanchana Shanmuga

What university/college are you attending in the fall?
    University of Texas at Austin

What do you plan to major in, and what are your career plans?
    Computer Science

What teacher impacted you the most and how/why?
Mr. Phillip Easton was my AP Physics 1 teacher during my junior year, and his impact went beyond teaching me about energy conservation and gravity. He always emphasized understanding physics principles while acknowledging that we were busy high school students. I believe Mr. Easton's ability to empathize with his students made him the most influential teacher to me, as he taught me the importance of balance in an academic setting.

What are your favorite memories of school?
My all-time favorite memory from school is the 2024 solar eclipse. It was exciting to see everyone gathering outside to witness this incredible event. I really appreciated the school's dedicated time for the total eclipse, and it was thrilling to experience the sudden darkness with my classmates at 1:00 in the afternoon. What I loved the most was how being at school allowed us to break from our usual routine and enjoy something extraordinary together.

In the years to come, how do you hope history remembers the Class of 2024?
In the years ahead, I hope the Class of 2024 is remembered not for their high school years, but for their remarkable achievements and contributions beyond.

    Dasari

    6. Nandini Dasari

What university/college are you attending in the fall?
    Rice University

What do you plan to major in, and what are your career plans?
I plan to major in biochemistry and pursue a career in healthcare/research.

What teacher impacted you the most and how/why?
Katie Gee, Newspaper. Over the past three years, Mrs. Gee’s classroom has become for me a safe space, one where I can explore and express my interests. Ms. Gee inspires me to think big, ask difficult questions, and test the limits of my creativity. And most importantly, she’s responsible for 99% of my pop culture knowledge.

What are your favorite memories of school?
My favorite memories of school are always tied to new, unique experiences. Exploring Boston with the newspaper staff,  experimenting with a "world dance" class, and attending school culture/art festivals with friends are what I remember most fondly.

In the years to come, how do you hope history remembers the Class of 2024?
I hope history remembers the Class of 2024 as a group of passionate and innovative individuals. With our diverse interests and talents, we have much potential to leave a lasting impact on our communities.

    Kaneira

    7. Lauren Kaneira

What university/college are you attending in the fall?
    Brown University

What do you plan to major in, and what are your career plans?
I plan to major in neuroscience and ethnic studies with the ultimate goal of becoming a researcher and doctor.

What teacher impacted you the most and how/why?
While many of my teachers have impacted me throughout high school, Mrs. Sonya Smith, my AP Biology teacher, made the greatest difference. During my virtual freshman year, Mrs. Smith proved that teaching was more than just reading facts off a screen, as she managed to connect with us through her Webex memes and in-depth tutoring sessions. I always knew I could count on her when I needed to, and she never turned down my infinite questions. Her class grew my curiosity and love for science, so much so that it eventually played a large role in why I chose my major. Mrs. Smith is genuinely one of the kindest and most dedicated teachers I've ever had, and the lessons I took away from her class will stick with me for life.

What are your favorite memories of school?
My favorite memories of school have been those with my friends, whether that's playing board games after competition season or eating Chicken Minis after a race. I also love hearing life stories from my teachers and bonding with my class over challenging material. Regardless of the activity or place, the people I met along the way made everything worthwhile.

In the years to come, how do you hope history remembers the Class of 2024?
I hope history remembers the Class of 2024 by our drive to accomplish what we set our minds to. We seek out challenges and find ways to achieve even our highest goals. I continue to be amazed by all our class has managed to do in the past four years, not only in academics or sports, but as individual people as well.

    Risberg

    8. Jack Risberg

What university/college are you attending in the fall?
    University of Texas at Austin

What do you plan to major in, and what are your career plans?
    Mechanical Engineering

What teacher impacted you the most and how/why?
Mr. Ralph Szydlik (Robotics) has inspired me to pursue a career in mechanical engineering. Through tedious drafting and a constant flow of projects in his class, Mr. Szydlik taught me the importance of failing, and he guided me after school in the tech club whenever I encountered a problem I couldn’t solve. After knowing him for a few years, I can confidently say that every day is a “HAPPY DAY!”

What are your favorite memories of school?
My favorite memories of school include designing FMHS’s FRC 2024 competition robot, playing board games in physics, and laughing with my friends at lunch.

In the years to come, how do you hope history remembers the Class of 2024?
I hope history remembers us fondly. As Mr. Szdlik would say, “Every student, Every challenge, Every day, 100%!”

    Das

    9. Shrest Das

What university/college are you attending in the fall?
Still deciding, but probably University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

What do you plan to major in, and what are your career plans?
Most likely Engineering or Computer Science, I plan on delving further into robotics and machine learning applications

What teacher impacted you the most and how/why?
Mr. David Parsons; AP Physics 1, 2, C. From always making sure we lost at Crokinole to flinging footbags across the room playing Hackey Sack, there was never a dull moment in AP Physics with Mr. Parsons. Mr. Parsons made learning genuinely fun in a way few teachers had before (how many teachers do you know that can nail a French-Indian accent or crush a Mongolian Throat Singing rendition of “Happy Birthday”), and he truly inspired my love for physics.

What are your favorite memories of school?
I’m not sure much else comes close to the times spent bonding with my teammates at robotics competitions. From midnight bowling escapades to ferris wheel adventures to roasting s'mores over the hotel lobby fire pit to dinners where we laughed so hard we couldn’t breathe, I’ve had the best memories––and met the best people––doing robotics across my high school career. When I look back, it’s those memories that I’m going to miss the most.

In the years to come, how do you hope history remembers the Class of 2024?
We entered high school not knowing how to navigate the “hybrid” world COVID had brought upon us. As we leave, I hope we are remembered for persevering despite those challenges, for empowering our community––and ourselves––to rise to the occasion and tackle our problems head-on.

    Singh

    10. Aditi Singh

What university/college are you attending in the fall?
    Dartmouth College

What do you plan to major in, and what are your career plans?
I plan to major in Neuroscience on the pre-med track.

What teacher impacted you the most and how/why?
The teachers that impacted me the most were the debate coaches- Mr. Eric Mears and Mr. Joseph Uhler. Alongside the academic education that I was equally passionate about, both of these coaches taught me how to believe in myself and equipped me with the skills to advocate for important issues. They have constantly focused on my development as an individual rather than as a debater, and their support for curiosity and free thinking encouraged me to explore the nuances of not only debate but my coursework. They do more than teach a class- they teach their students how to be good people and members of society, and I couldn't thank them more for that.

What are your favorite memories of school?
My favorite memories of school were always spending time with kind peers in spaces where I felt safe. Whether this meant the sectionals in orchestra, discussions in Ms. Massey's class, or bonding over shared confusion in Mr. Parson's class, I have been fortunate to have a school that has built such an incredible community to be a part of.

In the years to come, how do you hope history remembers the Class of 2024?
I hope history remembers our class as those who chose to come together. In a time where society as a whole is experiencing increased volatility, retaining empathy for those around us has become more important than ever. After growing up seemingly surrounded by one global catastrophe after another, I hope we are the class who recognizes that the only way to solve these problems is discourse with mutual respect on both sides of the table.
