TRANSITION COMMITTEES
LISD places a high priority on supporting students, families and staff impacted by changes effective for the 2025-2026 due to campus retirements and boundary changes. Our focus is ensuring that all students have access to an exceptional educational experience in LISD, which requires a welcoming, safe, caring and inclusive environment at every campus in our district. Campuses being retired will form Legacy Committees to honor the community and history of closing campuses. Partnering schools will also provide intentional opportunities to welcome new students from a closing campus or as a result of an attendance boundary adjustment through Focus Connections Committees.
COUNSELING SUPPORT
We recognize that saying goodbye to a campus that holds so many memories and connections is deeply personal, and it’s natural to feel a range of emotions as you navigate this change. Please know that the Lewisville ISD Counseling & Social Work Services department is here to support all students and schools for the remainder of the 2024-25 school year, and also as they transition into the 2025-2026 school year.
Developmentally, students react to, and process change differently. Having a calm and reassuring approach may be helpful. It would be normal for students to have many questions, some that can be answered now, and some in the days ahead.
Below are age-appropriate strategies to guide your family in supporting your student(s) through campus changes:
- Be honest and clear
- Explain the change simply
- Acknowledge their feelings
- Reassure them
- Encourage the dual truths of feeling sad and excited
- Focus on the positive aspects
- Highlight new opportunities
- Emphasize growth
- Talk about the opportunity for making new connections
- Encourage connections
- Boost their confidence
- Share stories of success
- Use relatable examples
- Turn it into an adventure
- Address concerns with care
- Listen and validate
- Reassure them gently
- Normalize uncertainty
- Stay positive and supportive
- Model calm confidence
- Be patient
Helping students transition to a new school is an opportunity to teach resilience and optimism. By providing honesty, empathy, and encouragement, we can help them view this change as a positive step in their journey. Together, we can make this transition a supportive and uplifting experience for every student.
