  • If a parent denies allowing a bilingual student to participate in bilingual classes, does the student still receive ESL services?
    Bilingual teachers are also ESL teachers and will teach in both Spanish and English. We will encourage parents to select Bilingual education as the proper class for the student.

    If a parent denies ESL services, does s/he receive ESL services?
    If a parent refuses ESL services, the student will be served as a general education student with no ESL services or linguistic accommodations.

    Are there services for immigrant students who arrive at an age that is too old to enroll in and/or complete HS?
    Students cannot be allowed to enroll in LISD schools after the legal age established by the LISD Board of Trustees and the State of Texas.     I have adopted a school age child from another country who does not speak English. If we speak only English with the child at home does our child really need ESL classes?
    That depends on the English language proficiency of the child. As a new student in LISD, your adopted child will be assessed in oral and written English. The scores will help to determine the correct level and type of assistance and programs for the student.

    I have received an exchange student at home. What are the correct languages to complete in the Home Language Survey?
    The language spoken at home must be the language of the host family in the U.S. The language spoken by the student most of the time must be the language spoken by the student most of the time since birth.

    What are the benefits of ESL classes for my child?
    ESL classes offer additional support as your child learns English. ESL classes are aligned with LISD curriculum with linguistic accommodations for students’ individual levels of English proficiency.

    My nephew is living with my family for the school year. What do I need to do to enroll him in ESL or bilingual classes?
    When you enroll your nephew in LISD, you will complete a Home Language Survey. Based on the information you put on the survey, your nephew may be assessed in oral and written English. The scores will help to determine the correct level and type of assistance and programs he will be offered.
