General Information

    How does it work?

Students work in small teams for 4 to 5 months on a project, called a challenge, of their choice. The solution they develop is presented at a tournament in late February or early March. Top performers in each challenge and age group advance to a state level affiliate tournament. Top placing teams at state advance to a global competition.

Do younger kids compete with the older kids?

    No. They are assigned teams according to grade level. There are 4 competition levels: Rising Stars/non-competitive – K-2nd grade; Elementary – 3rd – 5th; Middle – 6th – 8th; and Secondary – 9th – 12th.

What is the cost to parents?

Team participation and tournament fees are paid by the district. Teams are responsible for cost of supplies and equipment and workshops – these costs are minimal. The district also partially funds state and global costs for the teams that advance to that level.

Who manages the teams and where do they meet?

Most teams are managed by parent volunteers. LISD provides training at no cost to them as well as support. Most teams meet at the home of the team manager or other team member. Some make other arrangements with their school, church, library or recreation center.

    When does it start?

Teams begin forming in September of each school year.
