Teams begin forming in September and October of each school year.  Students are assigned teams according to grade level.  There are 4 competition levels:  Rising Stars/non-competitive (K – 2nd grade); Elementary (3rd – 5th grade); Middle (6th – 8thgrade); and Secondary (9th – 12th grade).

Students work in small teams for 4 to 5 months on a project of their choice, which is called a challenge. The solution they develop is presented at a tournament in late February or early March. Top performers in each challenge and age group advance to a state-level affiliate tournament. Top placing teams at the state level then advance to global competition.

Team participation and tournament fees are paid by the district. Teams are responsible for the minimal cost of supplies, equipment, and workshops.  The district also partially funds state and global costs for the teams that advance to that level.

Most teams are managed by parent volunteers and normally meet at the home of the team manager or a team member.  Destination Imagination provides training and support at no cost to the teams.

Team managers are required to have a current background check on file with LISD and must also submit a background check through DI, Inc.
