In accordance with Texas State Law I screen all students in kindergarten, first, third and fifth grade. I also check all the students that are new to LISD. 2nd and 4th graders are screened on request from the parent or teacher. The types of screenings are a little different depending on the grade.
Kinder-vision and hearing
1st, 3rd & 5th vision, hearing and Acanthosis Nigricans*
Acanthosis Nigricans is a light brown-black, velvety, rough or thickened area on the skin-usually the back of the neck but can also be on the armpits or knuckles. It can be a primary marker that signals high insulin levels that can lead to Type 2 Diabetes. If this screening is positive I will also check your student's height, weight, blood pressure and body mass index.
I will only contact you if your student doesn't pass his/her screening. At that point I will send a referral home to follow up with either your eye doctor or pediatrician. I do have some resources available to students that do not have vision coverage. Feel free to contact me about any of the screenings or referrals.
