Career & College Readiness

  • Career Readiness

According to the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE), career readiness involves three major skill areas: core academic skills and the ability to apply those skills to concrete situations in order to function in the workplace and in routine daily activities; employability skills (such as critical thinking and responsibility) that are essential in any career area; and technical, job-specific skills related to a specific career pathway. These skills have been emphasized across numerous pieces of research and allow students to enter true career pathways that offer family-sustaining wages and opportunities for advancement. Career Cruising

There are many resources available today to help students identify possible career choices. LISD uses a comprehensive career program at all secondary campuses called Career Cruising. View the Career Cruising parent powerpoint. For more information, including instructions for accessing the parent portal or student login, please contact your campus counselor.

    Resources:

    • AchieveTexas is designed to help students (and their parents) make wise education choices. It is based on the belief that the curricula of the 21st century should combine rigorous academics with relevant career education. When schools integrate academic and technical education, students can see the "usefulness" of what they are learning. They system also facilitates a seamless transition from secondary to postsecondary opportunities.
    • Reality Check is designed to help students understand how much money they will need to earn in the future; how much certain occupations pay; what training and education is required for various jobs, and much more. Start here for your own Reality Check.
    • Use the LiveBinder created by AchieveTexas to see a wealth of career-related resources for counselors to use with students and parents in developing the students' personal graduation plan, as well as other college and work-related resources in helping students meet their future career goals beyond high school.
