English as a Second Language (ESL) is an instructional program for students whose dominant language is not English. The purpose of the program is to increase the English language proficiency of eligible students so they can attain academic standards and achieve success in the classroom.
Our teachers at BB Owen School are certified in Core Content, English as a Second Language (ESL) and use the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) strategies with our students.
The Language Acquisition Specialist/ESL facilitator works with the classroom teacher to help develop language acquisition and cognitive academic language skills through the use of sound instruction techniques’. The ESL program provides English Language Learners the opportunity to grasp the academic, social and cultural aspects of the English language through the teaching of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
