  • Second grade is a foundational year in which students learn to become more independent in their learning and thinking. Students will practice making positive choices and work on developing academic and social skills to set them up for success.  All students will be learning about leadership skills and working with others to incorporate these dynamics into their daily classroom routines.

Second graders use a variety of problem-solving strategies.  Math thinking will entail the use of models, pictures and written explanations.  Daily science lessons will emphasize hands-on exploration and the 7 skills all scientists use when conducting investigations.  Reading skills will be strengthened by using a variety of toolkit lesson strategies to increase fluency and reading stamina.  Students will also be improving their comprehension skills through inferencing and summarization strategies.
