• Our children are our most valuable resource. For that reason LISD provides a registered nurse on each campus. The goal of the school nurse is to maximize the educational opportunities of each student by identifying, assessing, preventing, managing, minimizing or removing barriers to education. School nurses monitor required immunizations, mandated health screenings, as well as health trends on the campus. Communication with families is important so parents are asked to keep the Student Health & Emergency Information Card up to date with current contact numbers, physician name, allergies, and medical needs.

The following screenings are required by the state of Texas; any problems identified will be reported to a parent/guardian.
Vision Screenings: Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st grade, 3rd grade, 5th grade, 7th grade, and any student new to LISD

    Hearing Screenings:
Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st grade, 3rd grade, 5th grade, 7th grade, and any student new to LISD

Acanthosis Nigricans: 1st grade, 3rd grade, 5th grade, and 7th grade will be screened for Acanthosis Nigricans, a condition that signals high levels of insulin in the body. This screening is done by looking at and feeling the skin on the back of the neck. If the first screening is positive, it will be followed by checking height, weight, and blood pressure. You can get more information on the ANTES web site or contact your school nurse.

Students may also have vision or hearing screened at the request of their teacher or the Special Education department. Parents may request screening at any time, simply call or stop by the health room.
