• National Junior Honor Society

    Students are selected in the spring semester of their 7th grade. Students will be notified if they qualify to join NJHS.

    Selection Process for Membership

    1. Candidates eligible for election to this chapter must be in their seventh grade year, with induction procedures taking place during the second semester of their 7th grade year. Candidates eligible for election to this chapter must have a minimum cumulative core subject average of a pure 93 without rounding. Classes must be on or above grade level. Honors and GT classes receive 5 points added to their scores. Core subjects used in this average are the following: math, science, ELA, social studies, and foreign language (if the student is enrolled). This scholastic level shall be the required minimum scholastic level of achievement for admission. All students who can rise in scholarship or above this standard may be admitted for election to membership. Entry is based upon cumulative grade point average for 6th grade and 1st semester of 7th grade core classes. Candidates shall be considered on the basis of citizenship, service, leadership, and character by self-reporting and confidential teacher input.  

    2. Criteria Evaluated by Faculty Committee:

    • Leadership - the leaders of their class; or ability to lead
      • Activities on application with responsibilities: band, choir, student council, athletics etc.
      • Exercises positive influence on peers in upholding school ideals and spirit
      • Exemplifies a positive attitude
      • Inspires positive behavior in others
      • Is dependable in any responsibility accepted
    • Service - an act of helpful activity; help; aid: to do someone a service.
      • Works well with others and is willing to take on difficult or inconspicuous responsibilities
      • Is willing to represent the class or school in interclass and interscholastic competition
      • Mentors persons in the community or students at other schools
      • Shows courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers, and students.

    • Character - A person of character demonstrates the following six qualities: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.  All judgments in this and other selection criteria should be free of speculation and rumor.
      • Takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously
      • Consistently exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior (e. g., cheerfulness, friendliness, poise, stability)
      • Cooperates by complying with school rules concerning property, programs, classroom, hallways, etc.
      • Demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and reliability
      • Regularly shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others
      • Observes instructions and rules, and is punctual, both inside and outside the classroom
      • Manifests truthfulness in acknowledging obedience to rules, avoiding cheating in written work, and showing an unwillingness to profit by the mistakes of others

    A student may request during their 8th grade year to be reevaluated for admission. We are happy to go through that process. We ask that they do so anytime after the first 9 wks. The requirements to be accepted are the same as in 7th grade. The student would become a member immediately after the acceptance and would be recognized with the new members at the end of their eighth grade year.
