Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce/Cross Timbers Family YMCA September Student of the Month
Caylie Cummings, TECC West Cosmetology Student and Marcus High School Senior, was named the Lewisville Chamber/Cross Timbers Family YMCA September Student of the Month. According to Caylie’s instructor Ms. Porter, she has shown all the traits necessary for becoming a professional in the cosmetology industry. She is a natural leader who is the first to participate, always willing to help other students, and someone who students look up to. Caylie has been working hard, attending class regularly to reach her 1,000 hours, and is willing to do what it takes to master all the techniques needed to be successful in cosmetology. She is definitely Ms. Porter’s go-to person because she can always count on her no matter the situation.
"I really appreciate receiving this award, and I’m thankful for my teachers for the help they have given me in this course," Cummings said.
Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce/Huffines Auto Dealership September Teacher of the Month
TECC West Cosmetology II Instructor and Department Head Cindy Porter was named the Lewisville Chamber/Huffines Auto Dealership September Teacher of the Month. Porter was recognized for being a valued member of the TECC West staff who works extremely hard to meet students’ needs. During remote learning last spring and beginning this school year, she has gone above and beyond to ensure students are keeping up with their hours as well as compliances with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. For the 2018-2019 school year, she had 85% of her students pass and earn their cosmetology license in Texas. Due to COVID-19, numbers were limited due to accessibility at testing locations throughout the state, but she has had several students pass the requirements as late as last week. Ms. Porter spent much of her summer packing up the cosmetology lab at Dale Jackson Career Center prepping for the move to the new TECC West campus. As soon as she was able to move into the campus, she worked countless hours preparing the cosmetology lab and ensuring it is compliant with the TDLR standards. Thanks to her dedication to the students and the school, the cosmetology program would not be where it was today without her leadership.
"I appreciate and feel honored to receive this award from the Chamber of Commerce for doing a job that I love," Porter said. "The gratification that comes from teaching, training and playing a part in helping students reach their goals is an amazing reward each and every day so receiving an award for that is beyond words."
Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce/DATCU Credit Union September School of the Month
Lewisville ISD’s TECC West is the district's newest state-of-the-art learning facility that opened its doors to students this school year. The 130,000 square-foot career and technical education center, located on the west side of I-35, is the new home for the former Dale Jackson Career Center, which opened in 1985 as one of the premier career and technology centers in the state of Texas. TECC West offers students across LISD the opportunity to choose from 18 programs, including new courses such as Cyber Security, Electrical, H-VAC, and Veterinary Tech. Featuring a student-run culinary restaurant, 2,500 square-foot greenhouse, television studio, and brand new forensic and health science laboratories, TECC West joins its counterpart, TECC East, in serving students from all five LISD high schools who are interested in working toward career certifications and/or advanced education.
"We are humbled and honored by the selection and recognition of our campus at TECC West," Career and Technical Education Director of TECC West Justin Gilbreath said. "This year, our theme is 'Beyond All Limits.' We look forward to providing all of our students with exceptional opportunities in their chosen field of study as we prepare students for their future. Thank you again for this prestigious honor."
