LISD Board Votes to Officially Name Steve Telaneus Track at Marauder Stadium
At their February Board Meeting, the LISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved the naming of the Marcus High School Track to the “Steve Telaneus Track at Marauder Stadium.”
Steve Edward Telaneus, better known as Coach T, was the beloved head cross country and track coach at Marcus High School until his passing in 2020. Coach T joined the Marauder family in 1986 originally as a wide receivers coach, before becoming their first cross country and track coach.
During his tenure at Marcus, Coach T led the Marauders to 16 straight boys district championships and 10 girls district championships. His teams combined for 16 district titles, and Coach T recorded 20 individual regional championships,16 state medalists and three state championships throughout his career. He was also named the National High School Coaches Association Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2002, and he was inducted into the National High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2004. His well-known mantra, “win with humility, lose with character,” is a core part of Marcus’ culture to this day.
LISD Facility Naming Committee President and Board Member Sheila P. Taylor summarized the many recommendations the committee received, highlighting Coach T’s enormous impact on his community. “Coach T entitled values that shaped his runner into outstanding individuals,” she said. “He showed unwavering dedication and genuine care for all of his athletes. We are proud to recommend that the Marcus High School Track be named after Coach Steven Edward Telaneus.”
