Griffin Middle School students and staff were recognized at The Colony Chamber's monthly luncheon held at Cascades Conference Center in The Colony, Texas on Thursday, Feb. 20.
Student of the Month – Jacob Yu
Jacob plays the clarinet and serves as a section leader for the Griffin Middle School Wind Ensemble. This year, he earned spots in both the All-District and All-Region Bands. He was also recently recognized as an Outstanding LISD Soloist. Beyond music, Jacob has been dedicated to taekwondo for the past seven years and holds a black belt. He has competed in both local and national tournaments, earning numerous awards. In addition to his achievements, Jacob is a member of the National Junior Honor Society, where he has volunteered his time to give back to the community.
Exceptional Student of the Month – Iason Porter
Iason is a determined 8th grader who has made incredible progress in his academic journey. A hardworking and resilient student, he embraces challenges and never gives up. With a natural entrepreneurial spirit, he's always exploring new ideas. His dedication and drive make him an inspiration to those around him.
Teacher of the Month – Linda Smith
Griffin Middle School English Language Arts teacher Linda Smith began her career 28 years ago as an elementary teacher on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. She was encouraged by a middle school principal to consider transitioning to secondary education and teaching middle school reading. She made the change and has never looked back, finding middle school to be her true teaching home.
Eighteen years ago, she moved to the DFW area to be closer to her aging father and was thrilled to join LISD, where she has since taught reading—now known as ELAR—at Griffin Middle School.
At home, she enjoys a lively household filled with family, including her retired husband, her daughter, who is in nursing school, and her beloved grandson. Much of her time is spent laughing with them and indulging in her love of reading.
