I want to let you know that today at the beginning of 7th period (2:45 pm) we will be doing a lockdown drill. I typically would not bother you with information like this as we do drills monthly, but in light of recent events I am emailing you, alerting the students during 6th period and the teachers will know as well. I don't want to frighten anyone, but I do think that it is time to practice and make sure we all understand what we need to do. Teachers will let students know at the beginning of 6th period so they won't be concerned that someone may really be in the building. If you have your child out at a doctor/dentist appointment at that time, please let them know.
We do practice lockdown drills multiple times during the school year and have done them already this year without student/teacher knowledge, but with all of the concern surrounding what happened in Florida, I would prefer to practice the drill with everyone knowing that it will be happening. The day after the incident in Florida, every teacher went over our security protocols during every period. We have gone over them two times since and tomorrow we will be presenting another reminder to the students about keeping doors locked, referring visitors by pointing at the signs on all doors to the front office and alerting teachers of visitors without name tags or LISD badges immediately. This may seem like I am overdoing it somewhat, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and your children's safety is of the utmost importance to me and the Downing staff. Feel free to email me if you have questions.
