Vickery Elementary Students Support Local Organization
Students and families donate goodies and gift cards to benefit Kyle's Place.
Vickery Elementary recently held a donation drive to benefit Kyle’s Place, a transitional living program for homeless youth. Kyle’s Place, which is located in Lewisville, is operated by nonprofit foundation, Journey to Dream and serves youths aged 14-22 who need shelter and other accommodations.
Wanting to perform a service project to help the community, Vickery students brainstormed who and how they could help.
“The students had a few ideas such as a children’s hospital, nursing home or homeless shelter,” Vickery attendance clerk Evelyn Rubio said. “Our student voted on Kyle’s Place because they were concerned other young people were in that situation.”
More than 50 students and their families donated an assortment of goodies including snacks such as popcorn and candy, as well as throw blankets and fuzzy socks. Vickery also collected more than 60 gift cards of various amounts to restaurants and movie theaters. Rubio and the Student Council are dropping off the donations on March 9 — just in time for Spring Break.
“Our students wanted to reach out and help them have some fun during Spring Break too,” Rubio said.
