Return to School Update | Sept. 1

In-person learning returns Sept. 8.

Today marks one week until we get to see many of our students return to campuses for the first time in almost six months. What a journey it has been since March! We want to thank you for your support, patience and grace as we have navigated through some very difficult decisions for our community, families and 52,000 students.

Some important updates and information for you as we prepare for our first day back on campuses, Tuesday, Sept. 8:

As a reminder, Monday, Sept. 7 is a student/staff holiday and all classes, schools and buildings will be closed. If you haven’t already, bookmark or download the Academic Calendar at

LISD has created the video below to give you more details about what families can expect when students return to campus next week, Tuesday, Sept. 8. Topics include district face coverings guidelines, health and safety protocols, lab-confirmed case notifications, student absences, and more. All families and students are expected to view the video before the first day of in-person classes.

We have received some questions about class sizes when we return to campuses, given the number of students that have selected virtual learning for the first 9 weeks of school. We want to clarify that, while there may be a smaller number of students learning in-person, there are also fewer in-person learning teachers to accommodate the need for virtual learning teachers. Consequently, in-person class sizes are expected to be about the same size as usual. With that said, every classroom in LISD will be supplied with at least 10-12 desk shields and desks will be spaced out as much as possible.

As a reminder, families will have the opportunity to change their learning pathway (in-person, virtual or virtual plus) choices at the end of every 9-week grading period throughout the school year. Requests for changes should be submitted to your campus anytime before the 7-week mark in the 9-week grading period. The first 9-week grading period ends on Oct. 16, therefore change requests must be made anytime prior to Oct. 2. Families will soon be provided a form to submit their change requests. Learning path changes will go into effect at the beginning of the next 9-weeks.
