B.B. Owen Elementary First Graders Get Surprise (Virtual) Visit from Dallas Stars Mascot
Victor E. Green joins Webex meeting to encourage reading, lift spirits.
As far as B.B. Owen Elementary first graders knew, they were getting on Webex in the afternoon of April 15 for a regular class meeting. Shortly after the virtual “meeting” began, Dallas Stars mascot Victor E. Green joined in.
The students’ faces immediately lit up as Victor E. Green joined in and played Justin Timberlake’s song, “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” and danced all around his home desk in Dallas. The students – and their parents – joined in for the dancing. First grade teachers Brooke Church, Ashley Piepenbrok and Melisa Prince, as well as Principal Jennifer Spitzer and Assistant Principal Josh Knapp, were dancing, too.
When the song finished, the teachers reminded all students that Victor E. Green and the Stars wanted to continue their Stick with Reading program partnership, which began in October, despite the current stay-at-home learning happening due to COVID-19. Victor E. Green nodded in agreement before waving goodbye to students.
It was refreshing for the students, teachers and administrators alike.
“During this time it is so important that our students still have access to the fun opportunities they would have if we were at school,” said Piepenbrok, who organized the surprise visit. “This situation can be stressful for our students and families, so it is important to remind them that school, even virtually, is fun and not only about completing academic tasks. We truly enjoyed seeing so many big smiles today.”
“The Dallas Stars have been great partners in education and we are thankful for them,” Spitzer said. “Even as school has moved to at-home learning, they have maintained contact with us and encouraged our students to continue reading and do their best. Victor E. Green added to this by bringing lots of smiles and laughter to our students, families and teachers.”
The students said it was a memorable surprise and motivator to finish the school year strong.
“I never would have thought we would get a visit from the Dallas Stars’ mascot, so when I saw him, my heart started beating so fast,” student Hadley Pemberton said. “Everyone was having so much fun!”
Added student Max Morris: “Getting surprised by Victor E. Green was a blast. He answered my three favorite wishes – to get to dance, sing and listen to music!”
