October Principal's Letter

Dear Parents, Students and Community Members,

It is hard to believe it’s already October!!  I’m a bit behind with my newsletter due to having to be out unexpectedly in mid-September for my father’s funeral.  But, I’m back on track now!  We had a very busy start to the year and September sure seemed to fly by.  Now with the weather turning a bit cooler, it’s more like Fall as it should be!  I hope some of you were able to get to the State Fair that began last Friday.  This upcoming weekend is supposed to be cooler, so it might be a good time to take advantage of the fun at the fair!

We had several events during the months of August and September, such as our Meet the Teacher Night, Parent University nights and our Ice Cream Social and PTA Membership Drive as well as our 5th grade performance at the September PTA General Meeting.  We hope you were able to attend these events and enjoy time meeting friends and neighbors.  It was great to see everyone as we returned from the summer and it was nice to catch up on how you all are doing.

Our Watch D.O.G.S. program is underway, so if you are a dad, grandfather, uncle or perhaps even an older brother (over 18) of a student at Morningside, we would love to have you join our Watch D.O.G.S. and become involved at school.  Thank you to Mr. Mark Nelson, who is leading this group of gentlemen this year!  The PTA Facebook page and our campus website will have information on how to get and stay involved in this program.  Join us!

Speaking of volunteering, our PTA can always use extra help and assistance with the various projects and events they put on each year.  If you’d like to know more about becoming a volunteer on our campus, please contact our PTA President, Rachel Doig at: Morningsidepta@yahoo.comor contact Ms. Shelton or me at or  We will be sure to get you in touch with the right folks!

The Mustang Stampede is Coming!!!

Our stampede is a celebration for all the hard work our students and parents put in to helping us raise money for our school and students.  Each year we try to raise money in order to improve things on our campus.  In years’ past, we have been able to purchase computer equipment, iPads, Smartboards, a new stage curtain, and the playground shade covering a majority of our playground area.  Funds raised have also been used to send teachers to professional learning workshops, buy equipment and needed items for our annual field day, purchase new musical equipment and programs for plays, buy computer software programs such as Brain Pop, (which classes use daily), purchase various items to honor our students and teachers during student appreciation and teacher appreciation, and to provide scholarships for students who may be in need of help with school supplies, field trip money, and personal items.

I can’t stress enough how important it is that we raise funds to be able to continue the work we do for our students at Morningside.  We do not receive any additional funding above what the state gives us per student each year.  That is why our fundraising is so vital for us each year.

After our Mustang Stampede Kick-off on October 11th, your child will come home with their fundraising packet.  We are working with Boosterthon again this year, and while the packets are a bit different, they are so much easier to manage using online components!  With the help of parents, students will be able to create a short video (it’s already done, you just insert their picture and perhaps set a monetary goal for fundraising with them) and you can email it out to friends and family living in other cities, states and perhaps countries.  Those you send it to can then make pledges or flat donations online and then you are set!  Along with the fundraising, we will be involved in daily Team Huddles and learning about good character through Mind Spark-part 2, which is the character development component of the Boosterthon program this year. It has a western theme so we are getting into the Cowboy spirit this year! Ms. Shelton and I have previewed the program and we are hooked!  We can’t wait to find out what happens!

Please continue to reach out to your family and friends and ask them to help support our campus and students!  We want to be able to provide our students with all they need and some extras too!

As for the day of the run…we invite parents to come and join in on the fun.  You are welcome to come and run with your children and/or cheer them on from the sidelines!  We could also use help with keeping track of the number of laps each child runs.  Volunteers are needed to “mark the laps” on the students’ t-shirts each time they come “full circle” around the track.  If you can volunteer, please get in touch with Amber Davenport at: (

Our run schedule will be similar to the times below.  We will finalize and send out final, confirmed times as soon as possible.

            Kinder and 1st – 8:15-9:15

            2nd and 3rd – 9:15-10:15

            4th and 5th – 10:15-11:15

As a reminder……All those who are new to our district and plan to volunteer at school must complete a Volunteer Criminal Background Check with our district through VOLY.  This also applies to those parents/volunteers who have been in our district for a while, and may have completed their background check more than 3 years ago.  Please make plans to apply online at so that you may be eligible to serve as a campus volunteer.   A campus volunteer is defined as anyone who comes on campus to assist our office, the teachers or students; attend events/assemblies on campus; have lunch with your child; attend field trips, class parties, etc.  It can take up to 2-3 weeks for the applications to be processed.

Gentle Reminder…

Please understand I have designated each of our parking lot areas for specific arrival and dismissal needs and I need all parents, drivers, etc. to adhere to our requests and follow what we have outlined.  We continue to see parents going through our front parking lot backward.  There is a “one way” sign that all drivers can see as soon as they pull in the front lot.  It has an arrow pointing to the right.  Please be sure to go the correct way in the parking lot.  We are also continuing to see parents and/or drivers parking in areas that are not designated for parking before or after school.  It is imperative that all vehicles are parked in a designated spot and not blocking traffic during arrival and dismissal times.

The back driveway is for arrival/dismissal of all students.  The front (smaller) lot is only for those who need to park and enter the building for school business and/or for emergency vehicles should any be needed during arrival and/or dismissal. The larger lot is for our yellow school buses, day care vans and parents with special needs students who require extra help and time to get out of or into their vehicles.  Parents are not allowed to park in the front (smaller) lot near the office to drop off or pick up their children.  If a parent feels it necessary to get out of their car to drop off or pick up their child, then parents must park in the LARGER lot, and walk children to the front door and/or pick them up from the front and walk them to the car.  Staff will not allow children to cross parking lots without their parents.  Additionally, please don’t motion to your child to cross parking lots and meet you at the car.  This is very dangerous and our students’ safety is of utmost importance.

Thank you for continuing to support our school family and public education!  We appreciate each of you very much!!
