LISD Board Makes Decision Regarding Place 1

Board President Sells thanks Thimesch, shares Board decision regarding filling Place 1.

“After our last regular meeting, long-time board member Kronda Thimesch announced she was stepping down from the board to focus on her campaign for house representative,” Board of Trustees President Katherine Sells said. “I want to take a moment to thank Mrs. Thimesch for her service, her leadership, and her tireless advocacy for not only the students of LISD, but for public schools across our state. She was a great board member and will continue to be a voice for our communities even as her service on the board ends.

“The board looks forward to the May 2021 elections to see who LISD voters will select for Place 1,” Sells said.

Filling Place 1

The Board determined it is in the best interest of the district to carry on without filling Place 1. The position will be up for election in May 2021.

Many factors played into this decision, but the major considerations were:

  • The Board believes it is important for voters to select the next representative for Place 1.
  • Incumbents historically experience an advantage in board elections, and by leaving the position open, all candidates enter the May 2021 election with a level playing field.
  • The training requirements for a new Board member are significant, and given the circumstances currently facing our district and our communities due to COVID-19, the Board felt its focus should remain solely on the district’s continued response to the needs of our students, families, staff and communities.

Information about how to file as a candidate for Place 1 will be available on the LISD website sometime in January 2021.
