Mill Street Receives New Little Free Library Thanks to Family's Generosity

The Matteson family partnered with the MSE PTA to build a new library structure.

For the Matteson family, reading is a shared passion. Parents Jaime and Scott and son Mason love collecting books as a family, so visiting the Little Free Libraries around their community is a no-brainer. The Little Free Libraries are exactly what they promise, small book-sharing boxes that are free to the community and allow visitors to take, donate, or exchange books as they please.

When Mason started Kindergarten at Mill Street Elementary last year, the Matteson family was excited to take advantage of the Little Free Library on campus. But on their first visit Scott, who is also a nurse in LISD’s Health Services Department, noticed a problem. “I realized that some of [the books] were moldy and wet because the library itself was in need of repair,” he said. Upon looking further he learned that the structure was beyond repair, and a new one would be needed to preserve the books.

Jaime reached out to the Mill Street Elementary PTA for assistance, who provided the funds for this rebuilding project. Scott spent the summer rebuilding the Little Free Library, with the help of son Mason, and installed it just a few days before both Scott and Mason began the school year.

“Our school truly appreciates the Matteson family and Mill Street PTA for their work on the new Little Library,” said Deborah Bailey, Mill Street Elementary Principal. “We look forward to many years of sharing the love of reading in our community!”
