Family Rights & Engagement

At Lewisville ISD, we believe education is a shared responsibility of students, staff, and community. Recent updates from the 89th Legislative Session (SB12) reaffirm the important role parents and guardians play in their child’s education. Texas law outlines parental rights in the Education Code, including opportunities to stay informed, ask questions, and, in some cases, request that a child be excused from certain activities or instruction.

Rights Regarding School Options

At Lewisville ISD, we recognize that parents have important choices when it comes to their child’s education, and we are proud to offer families a wealth of opportunities right here in our district. From specialized STEM academies and dual language programs to career readiness pathways at our TECC centers, LISD provides educational experiences designed to meet a wide range of student interests and goals. Rights Regarding Course of Study & Supplemental Services

Rights Regarding Instructional Materials and Library Materials

LISD believes parent involvement in the instructional materials review process is essential, and provides opportunities for online and in-person review of instructional materials. These opportunities are posted on the LISD website as they are scheduled.

LISD recognizes that the child’s parent/guardian is the primary decision maker regarding the student's access to library material. In general, a student is allowed to self-select library materials as part of literacy development and the library program. District staff may assist a student in selecting library material; however, the ultimate determination of appropriateness remains with the student and parent/guardian. In accordance with Senate Bill 12, LISD has created an online library parent portal. Instructions for accessing the parent portal are available at LISD.net/books.

LISD has Board policies in place for both instructional material review (EFA) and library material access (EFB).

The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills determine the content that is taught in classrooms across Texas. These skills are required by state law.

Rights Regarding Grade, Class Rank, and Attendance Information

LISD’s Board policy EIA details how grades for class assignments and examinations will be awarded. The district also provides all grading guidelines and course descriptions on the Learning & Teaching webpage, making all details available for families to review.

Rights Regarding Health Education Instruction

The LISD SHAC serves as an advisory council to assure community values are considered in recommendations, changes, and/or additions to the school’s health education curriculum and instruction that may be considered by the LISD Board of Trustees. LISD accepts applications annually, and the council meets quarterly to discuss issues and concerns that impact the entire district, not just individual campuses. Rights Regarding Health Care and Health-Related Services

TEA guidance related to SB12  indicates written consent is only required

As part of SB12, starting Sept. 1, 2025, the Parent/Guardian Consent for Students to Seek Care from the School Nurse will be required for each child to receive care from the school nurse and/or other trained staff members for illness or injury. The form is available in each family's Skyward Family Access account. The consent form includes details related to each health related services offered by LISD.

Rights Regarding Gifted and Talented Programs

Rights Regarding Data Collection Practices

Lewisville ISD takes student data privacy very seriously and follows strict procedures to protect student information. For any classroom resource outside of LISD’s approved tools, parent permission is required each school year for students under 13 years of age, and CTE/special programs also require guardian release forms for certification and training software. LISD has more than 300 vendor agreements in place that clearly define data ownership, security measures, and how student information is protected. Since 2016, LISD has been nationally recognized with the Trusted Learning Environment Seal for its leadership in safeguarding student data, an honor awarded to only 35 districts across the country.

In Lewisville ISD, we believe the best way to ensure all students are confident, equipped with the knowledge and skills to adapt and thrive for their future is by encouraging open and honest conversation between families and district staff.
