Board Spotlight: Allison Lassahn
This year LISD has chosen "One Choice, One LISD" as the theme for the school year. In a time when one could argue public education is under attack, LISD has set out to provide examples of why public education is an excellent choice for families.
My family did not consciously choose LISD when we first moved to the area. My husband and I bought our first house in Lewisville and at the time, kids were not on our radar. We chose Lewisville because it was close to where we worked, it was affordable and a safe place to live.
Fast forward a few years and we had our first child. By this time, we had moved to Highland Village and were thinking more about what school would look like for our child. The buzz we heard from other families was LISD was the place to be! What we did not know at the time, was how critical LISD would be for us. When our first child was about 3 years old, it became apparent that we would need special education services. As many parents do, I began talking to other parents with children who had similar needs to ours. I quickly learned that LISD was a destination district for parents with children in need of special education services.
During a recent board workshop, Dr. Rapp presented a chart indicating LISD is STILL a destination district for special education. We are ranked 4th among the top 100 largest Texas School Districts where 19.8% of our student population is receiving special education services. This is just one of the many reasons that families choose LISD.
For my family, we did not choose to move to Lewisville for the school district, but we did choose to stay here because of it. We have had a student in LISD for almost 20 years. I am so proud of the opportunities available to all our students, including my own. It is my goal as board member to make sure that LISD continues to be a destination district for many years to come.
