What is STEM
STEM Education, a term initiated by the National Science Foundation, is an educational approach which focuses on one or more of the four disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and math. In an ever-changing global economy, when technical and scientific skills are increasingly important in the work force, exposing children to STEM learning in the early years is key. Currently, only 26% of STEM jobs are held by women. It is important to ensure that girls as well as boys are exposed to and encouraged in the area of STEM. It’s never too early to introduce STEM to your child and to consider how to sustain interest in STEM in elementary school.
Lewisville ISD focuses upon the Engineering Design Process, a practical approach to problem solving that applies to all subjects, not just engineering and computer science! Engineers, designers, as well as product and systems coordinators, often start in the middle or end of the process, and they may repeat steps as they design. Failure is part of that process. And, learning from failure is an integral part of making successful engineering designs and computer programs. As children try different solutions to STEM challenges guided by the Engineering Design Process, they develop collaboration, communication, and critical thinking skills. These intern leverage science, mathematics, and technology connections which help students learn more deeply; to see STEM as more relevant to their lives; and to help students move toward future STEM career pathways.
