Hello, I am Mrs. Jarvis the Lakeview Middle School Choir Director. This is my 38th year to teach. This is my 8th year at Lakeview. I have taught students from 2 years old at a Montessori school to juniors in college at Sam Houston State University. I recieved my BMEd from the University of Texas, Permian Basin and my MMEd from Southwest Texas State. I have also attended Sam Houstons State University, Abilene Christian University, and Texas A&I University. I have always wanted to be a teacher and my passion is teaching Choir. I sing women's barbershop music. - That is four part a cappella harmony. I sing the Baritone part (that is like Alto 1) with The Sooner Sensations in Moore Oklahoma. I love it when I can share this music with my students! It is so much fun and exciting when they can hear the "ring" when they sing! - ask me about it sometime.
I love teaching my students all about music and how to improve their singing abilities. We will start the year with learning the basics of becoming musically literate. Each class will begin with voice building (a class format of voice lessons) including posture, breath, range and how to make the most beautiful sounds possible. We will follow that with ear training which will enable you to listen critically not only to your own performance but to those around you, teaching you what to listen for and what to ignore. This will be followed by learning music notation which is necessary to learn so that you will not only be able to read and perform music but will know how to mark and follow a choral score.
All of the activities listed above will enable you as an individual, and us as a choir to perform music to the best of our abilities in a way that will be enjoyable to our audiences and give us a sense of pride in the hard work that we will do to accomplish our final performances.
I am looking forward to working with you to help you become the very best musician that you can become and to prepare you for a musical future.
This full-year course is designed to provide opportunities for students to learn to sing in a group setting and lead students to acquire the skills needed for satisfactory performance. Students are required to attend scheduled rehearsals and events.
