Robotics is a club for 5th graders and a few 4th graders in spring using the EV3 Mindstorms Robotics kits. Check out their website here.
In spring, 3rd and 4th graders get to try Robotics to see if they can build and program a basic robot in a team. This will take place weekly on Wednesdays and students can sign up through the PLC signup time.
In the fall, 4th and 5th graders are invited to apply for team membership. Three teams of 6 - 8 students are formed to compete in the FIRST LEGO League competition in December. During this competition, students are scored on their robot design and technical knowledge of programming, a research presentation based on the year's theme, how well the team works together to solve problems during the competition, and the three trials their robot runs on a predetermined (and much practiced) course. The culmination of all this hard work is the qualifying competition in December after which a number of teams are selected to compete in the regional competition in February.
If your 4th or 5th grader is interested in joining one of the teams this year, the forms will be sent out electronically to all 5th-grade parents and paper copies will be available in late August.
Meetings will be held after school from 3:00 - 4:00 on Mondays as well as during our Wednesday in-school club time.
The cost for this is $100 for the season. This includes registration with FIRST, registration for all tournaments, the kit for competition, and a team t-shirt.
I will be joined by Mr. Swaim and Mrs. Edwards as co-coaches. Ms. Smith and Mrs. Sanchez will oversee the Wednesday practices during the school day. All inquiries should be addressed to Mrs. Walker.
