Cosmetology is a two-year program geared towards students who are interested in obtaining a state license to practice as a cosmetologist in the state of Texas. The curriculum is focused on the study of anatomy, electricity and chemistry, safety and infection control in relation to hair, nails, and skin and salon duties. In the first year of Cosmetology, students will work independently and cooperatively in a clinical lab setting to learn the essential skills and knowledge to pass the Texas Department Licensing and Regulations state board exam.
Year two of Cosmetology encompasses theories and principles of cosmetology with a general understanding of how salon services are performed. Students will perform advanced haircutting, styling, chemical textures, hair coloring, skin and nail services. Students will gain an understanding of owning and operating a salon, professional ethics, and establishing good public relations with patrons, co-workers, employers, and society. Upon completion students will have learned the skills and knowledge to pass the required Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations state board exam.
Cosmetology I Teacher
When I was at Denton High school we had a cosmetology program in the building. I wanted to do the program but I played volleyball and softball so there was not time and my friends told me I was too much of a tomboy to do hair. For some crazy reason, I listened to their opinions. I ended up going to UNT to gain a Bachelors in Health Promotion. After I graduated, I coached volleyball and basketball while subbing for PE often. I did not feel like this was my spot and left to travel with a children’s choir from Kenya for three years.
When I returned from tour, I decided to go cosmetology school! NCTC had a great program for Cosmetology Operators and I took my chance there. I have had my booth in Denton for 9 years. I decided that I wanted to advance my career in this industry. I returned to NCTC for my Cosmetology Instructor license. I served the students there for three years.
My passion for this industry is rooted in my desire to serve and to help people. I am good at the practical aspect of doing hair but people in my chair with smiles and feeling better about themselves when they leave is my favorite aspect of doing hair. My favorite practical skill is doing special occasion styles. I have done hair for many weddings, proms, homecoming and special parties!
I have a lovely family who is constantly growing. My parents have been married 44 years! I have two older sisters and a twin brother with an incredible sister-in-love. I have 4 nieces and 2 nephews. All three of my siblings are also teachers. I enjoy time with family, friends, attending sporting events, working out, playing games, meal prepping, eating sweets, going to the lake and dancing.
Cosmetology II Teacher
I attended Beauty school at Metroplex Beauty School in Mesquite Texas and received my Cosmetology license in 1987. My mom is a cosmetologist so I grew up in a salon watching her work and fell in love with this industry. I could not imagine life outside of the hair business!
In 2009 after working alongside my mom in a salon for 22 years and decided I wanted to expand my interest in the industry and went back to school to get my instructor license so I could teach. I didn’t think anything could top working with hair but the moment I got into the Beauty school atmosphere I knew that is where I needed to be.
In 2014 I started teaching at Dale Jackson Career Center. Leaving the salon and my clientele was one of the hardest things I have done, but teaching High School students about this industry and helping them get licensed is one of the most rewarding things I have done!
