Tactile Input

Tactile: Activities that involve touch or oral choices. Light touch is usually not organizing. Tactile exploration should be coupled with deep pressure activities.

  • Playing in a sand box
  • Exploring various tactile media: birdseed, rice, beans, sand, shaving cream
  • Hunting for items hidden in tactile media
  • Identifying items by touch alone
  • Finger painting
  • Cooking

Sensory Organizing through the Oral system:

The mouth has many sensory receptors including taste, proprioceptors and touch or texture receptors. For some children, providing a variety of foods or oral stimuli, can assist with the organization of sensory information as well as the development of fine motor skills.

Some ideas include:

  • Provide a variety of snacks (crunchy, chewy, hard, sweet, sour, or salty) during sedentary activities.
  • Provide a variety of snacks during fine motor activities
  • Provide a water bottle at the desk
  • Resistive chew with tug and pull (i.e. twister licorice)
  • Blowing/Sucking activities
