The small muscles of the hand are involved in fine motor skills. These muscles require exercise and practice. Providing toys and games that work these muscles will help to prepare the child for fine motor tasks at school.

Thumb on top!

Insert Macroni through a hole in the lid.

Most of the toys available today do not readily exercise the hands. These toys are push-button, battery operated toys, or passive entertainment toys such as DVD, Game Boy and Computer.

Important: Small loop on the bottom of the scissors.

Toys that exercise that work the small muscles of the hand will better prepare your child's hands for the tasks that will be required at school.

Some examples of these toys are:

Use small, half inch, beads.

Use small broken pieces of chalk for tripod grasp.

Lite Brite: small pegs facilitate tripod grasp.

Pickler, available at kitchen supply stores.

Cutting Play Doh with knife and scissors.

Stawberry hullers and tweezers.

Use small stamps, held with the fingers.

Magnadoodle.
