The Denton County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is a public service organization whose sole purpose is to provide community outreach and social uplift to the Denton County Communities. Denton County Alumnae will be awarding scholarships up to $5,000 to eligible African American graduating high school students within Denton County.
The following eligibility requirements must be met:
Applicant must be an African American male or female student
Applicant must attend school and reside in Denton County
Applicant must be college bound, graduating in the May/June 2017 school year
Applicant must have a GPA ≥ 2.75 on a 4.0 scale
Scholarship Application Packet Requirements:
The applicant will be required to submit an application form, three letters of recommendation, small non-returnable photo, and write a short essay in order to be considered for a scholarship. An official sealed transcript will also be required. The 2017 short essay topic is:

1. What are the pros and cons of electing the President based on electoral votes versus the popular vote: OR
2. Electors are given the autonomy to vote in favor of or in opposition to the popular vote. How does this strengthen or threaten the democratic process?
The essay should be a minimum of two pages, but not longer than three pages typed and double spaced.
Letters of recommendation should be provided from:
A faculty member written on the school’s original letterhead
A community service organization written on the organization’s original letterhead. The letter should include the length of volunteer hours and years of service
A personal recommendation from someone other than a relative
Completed applications, official sealed transcripts, letters of recommendation, and essay must be postmarked by Friday, March 10, 2017, in order to be considered for a scholarship. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Please make additional copies of the application form as needed.
The scholarship recipients will be recognized at their High School Senior Awards Program. All recipients are asked to attend the Sorority’s Annual May Week Program on Sunday May 6, 2017.
