LISD Profile: Secondary Teacher of the Year Rhonda Shelton
Check out the profile about Lewisville ISD’s Secondary Teacher of the Year Rhonda Shelton, who discusses her favorite thing about her job; what she enjoys doing in her spare time; and dishes some advice to someone who is interested in becoming an educator.
Lewisville ISD (LISD): What has been the most valuable lesson you have learned as a teacher?
Rhonda Shelton (RS): The realization that "learning never stops" would have to be the most valuable lesson for me. As teachers, we want that for our students, but it's also true for us. Even after teaching for thirty-three years, I know I still have so much to learn, about teaching, about people, and about life. That's what keeps teaching so much fun.
LISD: What is your favorite thing about your job as an educator in LISD?
RS: LISD is filled with people who care enough to do the hard things. Education by its very nature is a service industry; we serve our students and our community. But LISD goes the extra mile to support, encourage, and provide an atmosphere where we hear concerns, take action, and work to solve challenges. I come to work everyday and know I will grow. That's also what I want for my students.
LISD: What is something that most would not know about you?
RS: When I was a high school senior, I worked at my grandparent's plant nursery. To be in the work-study program and work that specific job, I had to be a "Future Farmer of America." It was prophetic. Now I'm a proud and grateful LHS Farmer! I've been blessed with fertile soil throughout my life.
LISD: What do you like to do in your spare time?
RS: Pouring into my family and my church occupies most of my time outside of school. I also love to travel. Anywhere, anytime- Just let me pack a backpack.
LISD: What piece of advice would you give to someone who is interested in becoming a teacher or entering the education field?
RS: I would tell someone who is considering education as a profession that it not a job but a calling. It's not about knowing all of the answers. Relax and learn; learn from colleagues, learn from supervisors, learn from students, learn from parents. You are not alone.
