The 4th grade teachers this year are Tamara Hoover, Jennifer Barentine, Terra Tallas, Robyn Rucker,Daphney Poole and Cindy Kincaid.. We work closely with one another and with our students to make 4th grade a successful year for everyone.
In reading, we focus on strategies for reading a variety of genres. We practice reading with fluency, develop vocabulary, respond to various genres, and inquire and research using a variety of sources.
Fourth graders have been busy with the writing process. We began the year reviewing and polishing our grammar and parts of speech. Next, we work on expanding sentences using adjectives and adverbs. Then we move onto powerful paragraphs. Finally, the students learn how to write a variety of papers as we work our way through the writing process.
The students will begin using their tools of elaboration guides at home and school to write their papers. We work very hard to prepare for the writing TAKS tests in the spring.
In Social Studies, we begin with a study of Geography. Geography is a skill that is practiced daily throught the school year. Next, we move onto a unit on Government and the cultures of people in Texas. We will then work on Native Americans and explorers and travel our way through Texas history until we come to industrialization in Texas.
Math is full of new challenges and reviewing old skills. The students will work on everything from place value to long division. Mastering multiplication is something we will be focusing on this year.
Fourth graders will have a busy year with experiments and a science project for the science exhibit. They will study the following topics: vertebrates, invertebrates, the human body, water, weather and atmosphere, and chemical reactions.
As you can see, fourth grade is full of new information for the students. We look forward to working with you to help fourth grade be a fun and successful year.
