What is Title I?

Title I is a federally funded program designed to improve educational opportunities.  This program serves students who meet the criteria for supplemental instruction.

In Lewisville ISD, the program emphasizes the improvement of language arts and reading strategies and skill.  Students in grades 1-3 are screened annually for student's selection.  Participation in the Title I program is determined by the results of specific classroom testing and teacher recommendation.

Title I Program Goals

Some of the goals of this program are to:

*      Develop positive attitudes towards reading and writing;

*      Deliver language arts and reading instruction according to the STUDENT'S needs;

*      Increase reading and writing achievement;

*      Support the classroom instructional program; and

*      Involve children in independent reading and writing at school and at home (through scaffolding).

Title I Instructional Program

Title I classes provide instruction which reinforces the classroom developmental language arts program in the areas of:

*      Comprehension, listening, reading, speaking and writing.

*      We also work to improve the areas of phonemic awareness and vocabulary development.

*      Children's Literature is used – We use a multitude of different texts with varying genres and topics.

*      I will be working with students to help them improve their AUTOMATICITY – or the rate at which they can read and write words with little attention or effort.  When a student is laboring over every little word, they will have very little success.  They will not comprehend what they are reading nor will they be enjoying what they are reading.

*      The lesions are designed to appropriately address student's reading difficulties.  The lessons will be targeted to what THEIR weaknesses are.

*      Ongoing assessment and monitoring will be tracked to watch the child's progress.

Parental Involvement in Title I

The home environment plays a major role in the Reading success of children.  The Title I program encourages parents to:

*      Get your child to school on time every day;

*      Read DAILY to your child;

*      Visit the library regularly;

*      Provide books for your child to enjoy; and

*      Read and write as a family.
