Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is required for enrollment?  Birth Certificate, Social Security card, immunization record, withdrawal form from previous school and proof of local residency (such as a utility bill.)

2. What can you tell me about the curriculum?  Our curriculum follows the guidelines set forth by the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills).  There is a committee that adopts the curriculum each year for our district.  Each campus has an in depth curriculum guide for parental perusal.

3. How many students are enrolled at Old Settlers Elementary (OSE)?  OSE currently has 857 students enrolled.  The student/teacher ratio is 22 per classroom in grades K-4 and 5th grade is 28 per classroom by district guidelines.

4. Do we have an active volunteer program at our campus?  Yes, most definitely.  PTA has a very active volunteer program in the classroom, office, surrounding grounds, etc.  Many parents give generously of their time.  We feel this is an important factor in your child's education.

5. What are the areas that are bussed? The general rule of thumb is 2 miles from the school, however some areas are eligible for bus transportation within the 2 mile limit if children have to cross an intersection with no crossing guard or sidewalks are not accessible.  For more information please contact Durham Transportation at (972)-221-4557.

6. Do we serve hot lunches?  Yes, our cafeteria provides a nutritionally balanced hot lunch each day.  Lunch ($1.75) and breakfast ($.75) tickets are available to purchase any school morning in the cafeteria in any dollar amount.  Free/reduced applications for school meals are available in our school office.  Adult lunch is $2.35 and breakfast is $1.00.

7. Do we allow visitors at lunch time?  We would be happy to have visitors at lunch time.  Please sign in at the office as a visitor and have your child include you in his or her morning lunch count.

8. How do we check students out for appointments?  Any student leaving campus during the school day would need to be signed out in our office.  Only people listed on the enrollment card would be able to sign your child out.  A valid drivers license will be requested when signing out students, this is for the protection of your child.

9. Do we have a nurse on campus?  Yes, we have a full time R.N. at OSE.

10. At what age can a child start school?  Students must be five years of age by September 1st to begin Kindergarten.  They must be six years of age by September 1st to begin First Grade.
