Parents should call the school office each day before 8:00 a.m. to report their child's absence. We have a recorder that answers the phone and takes messages for this purpose from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. each day. Parkway's phone number is 469-713-5979.
Students need to bring a note to give to the teacher on the first day back to class explaining the reason for the absence. An excused absence is one which results from personal illness, sickness or death in the family, quarantine, weather, or road conditions making transportation dangerous. There may be other special circumstances with PRIOR APPROVAL from the Principal (e.g., absence for the purpose of observing religious Holy Days when it is a tenet of their faith).
Students should plan to arrive at school between 7:50 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., although doors will open at 7:30 a.m.. Students may enter at the main entrance by the office.
Please do not drop your child off earlier than 7:30 a.m. at any time during the school year. Also, please observe traffic flow signs. Please do not park your car along the curb at the front of the building. Students will enter and exit at the front of the building. Both drive entrances to the campus may be used to drop off or pick up children. The Southeast entrance is also used for buses. Please observe the striped Buses Only Parking. Please do not park in this area. Tardies are marked after 8:00 a.m. Students arriving at school before 7:50 a.m. should go to the cafeteria if in grades 2 and 3. If in grades 4 and 5, they should go to the gym. Kindergartners and first graders enter the main entrance and go to the library. Students arriving after 7:50 should go directly to class. Students having breakfast should arrive at 7:30 a.m. but no later than 7:45 a.m. and go to the cafeteria.
All students should plan to leave the school building and grounds no later than 3:00 p.m., unless detained for a school reason. Parents will be notified in advance if the student is to be detained after school.
The school phone should NOT be used to inform or change the way your child goes home. A not to the teacher or coming to the school in person is the safest for your child.
To attempt to relieve the dismissal rush, the following special dismissal plan is in effect:
2:55 Bus/Day Care/Kindergarten/1st Grade Students
3:00 All remaining students
Students are expected to attend school regularly and be on time for classes in order to benefit from the instructional program and to develop habits of punctuality, responsibility, and self discipline. Students who have good attendance generally achieve higher grades and enjoy school.
The law requires students to be in attendance for at least 90% of the 180 day school year in order to receive credit. Absences will be reviewed each six weeks. An attendance committee will hear petitions for class credit room parents of students with excessive absences.
Bus transportation is provided for eligible students. This is a privilege that, for safety reasons, require strict behavioral guidelines. Failure to follow bus rules may result in loss of this privilege.
Students may bring their lunch from home or purchase an entree from the cafeteria. A free or reduced lunch ($.40)/breakfast ($.30) program is available to those students who qualify. Applications are available in the school office after the initial distribution of forms. The regular prices are:
Breakfast $ 1.00
Lunch $ 1.95
Lunch and breakfast tickets may be purchased for any number of days (a week or more is preferred). Make checks payable to Parkway Lunch Fund.
Cafe Parkway
Students will have the following options for lunch: A choice of 3 entrees each day which could consist of a regular type A meal, basket, sandwich, salad bar or potato bar (served on designated days only). Items are also sold a la carte. Parents who do not want a la carte items to be purchased by their children should contact the cafeteria manager. For more information see http://www.lisd.net/childnutrition/onlinepayments.html
In order to enhance understanding and maintain a safe and effective learning environment, the Parkway staff has developed a School-wide Discipline Management Plan that provides for consistency and continuity from one grade level to another. You should receive a coy of the plan. The Panther Code is the basis for the high expectations we hold for all students at Parkway, with the preservation of the student's dignity of utmost importance. This Code, School-wide Expectations, and Classroom Discipline Plans will be posted in each classroom.
These will be discussed during the first few weeks of school, and individual classroom plans will be sent to parents for their signature.
If it is necessary to refer a child to the office, the teacher will fill out a Discipline Referral Form. The principal will discuss the situation and decide on logical consequences for the child. Parents will be called and will receive a copy of the Discipline form.
Parkway Panther Code of Conduct:
I am RESPECTFUL
I am RESPONSIBLE
I am SAFE
I am PREPARED
We are here to learn; therefore; I will:
Parent/Teacher conferences provide a better understanding of the student and are very helpful to both the teacher and the parent. Parents wishing a conference should call the school office several days in advance to allow the teacher time to prepare. A conference between the teacher and parent may be requested on the report card each six weeks. Teachers, of course, will request conferences as appropriate.
The possession and/or use of any controlled substance is in violation of LISD policy and will be dealt with accordingly.
The Lewisville Independent School District's guidance curriculum component provides a means for helping students learn skills that the State Board of Education has identified as priority needs of students. Through guidance curriculum activities, students develop: self esteem, motivation to achieve, decision-making skills, goal setting and planning skills, cross-cultural effectiveness, and responsible behavior. These skills are taught through classroom presentations, small group interactions, and at the individual level. The counselor, as a member of the instructional team, is a vital resource to students, teachers, administrators, and parents in helping build the skills needed to meet the dynamic forces of our society. The basic goal of school guidance is to enhance the student's educational development.
We feel student dress/grooming is a
matter that should be determined by parents in conjunction with school
guidelines. Our concern is to prevent any disruption that may occur when
a student's clothing is distracting to other students. Therefore, we ask
that the following not be worn to school:
Parents must come to the office to sign their child out of class. A permission slip will be filled out by the parent and signed by office personnel for parents to take to the child's teacher. Only people listed on the enrollment card will be allowed to pick up a student during school hours. Please send a note to school with your child if there is a change for a particular day. The office will request a driver's license for identification on any person picking up a child. While this may be inconvenient, please understand that it is a precautionary measure taken with your child's safety in mind.
The LISD Community Education Department provides extended day services at Parkway Elementary. Students eligible for the program are those enrolled in afternoon kindergarten through fifth grade. The Extended School Day operates between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.. The charge for ESD is $35.00 per week for the first child and $30.00 for each additional child in the family. The program coincides with the LISD calendar and is not in effect during school holidays, school closing due to inclement weather, or teacher in-service days.
Please contact Valerie Foster at the LISD Community Education Department at 972-219-0086 for additional information regarding the program or to register your child.
During the year, parents may call the Parkway ESD directly at 972-459-9419 between 4:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m..
The school year is divided into six grading periods (see the school year calendar for exact dates of the grading periods). Report cards are issued at the end of each six week period. Report cards need to be signed by the parent or guardian and returned promptly to the student's homeroom teacher.
Careless disposal of gum in drinking fountains, furniture, carpet, and floors present sanitation and cleaning problems along with costly repairs. Therefore, gum chewing is NOT permitted.
Students will be given temporary care in case of illness/injury during school hours. If your child has a medical condition, it is essential that the school be informed immediately. We must also have correct, current work and home telephone number for each student's parent/guardian. Please notify the school immediately if this information changes during the school year. It is also important that we have an emergency number (neighbor, friend, relative) on file at school in case the parents/guardian can not be reached.
To ensure the protection of all children, any student exhibiting the following symptoms must be sent home:
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE CHILD BE "FEVER FREE" FOR 24 HOURS BEFORE RETURNING TO SCHOOL
In order for a student to receive any medication during school hours, these guidelines must be followed:
IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS
Texas laws require immunizations for all persons enrolled in public schools. ALL IMMUNIZATIONS SHALL BE COMPLETED BY THE TIME OF ENROLLMENT. If this is not possible, children will be allowed to enter, provided at least one immunization in the series has been initiated, and all are completed as soon as medically feasible. A doctor's statement or health department verification regarding proof of immunization from the following diseases is needed for all students. (see web site below)
The decision to close Lewisville
schools because of inclement weather will be made by 6:30 a.m.. School
closings will be reported to the radio and television stations listed below.
If school is delayed, the Elementary day will begin at 9:30 a.m..

Library Hours: 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
Each student at Parkway has a library card that is to be kept in the library. We have an automated circulation system which means that books are checked in and out using the computer and a bar code reader.
Kindergarten - First Grade
Students may check out one book at a time. The book must be returned in
order to receive another book.
Second Grade - Fifth Grade
Students may check out two books at one time. More than two books may be
checked out for research projects with teacher or parental permission.
Books may be kept for one week with the option of one renewal. If a student needs to keep a book longer, he/she may discuss the circumstances with the librarian to see if an exception is necessary.
No fines are charged for overdue books at the elementary level, but students are responsible for returning the books on time. Second through fifth grade students may have check-out privileges revoked if one of the two books checked out is overdue for more than two weeks. Parents will receive notification if the librarian finds this to be necessary to retrieve the overdue book. Regular overdue notices will be sent home.
Books may be returned in the book drop in the front of the circulation desk at any time. Names are not necessary. When the book is checked in, the computer automatically knows who is returning the book.
Reference materials and magazines may not be checked out of the library by students. Students may use these materials during scheduled class times or at open library times.
Lost Books
Ample time will be given to students for finding a book perceived to be lost.
After the students has exhausted every possibility for find the book, a bill
will be sent home. The student will be expected to pay for the book or
have check-out privileges revoked.
Damaged or Destroyed Books
The student who checks out a book is totally responsible for the care of that
book. Students are taught book care rules in library classes including
rules pertaining to younger siblings and pets. No matter what circumstances,
damaged or destroyed books are he responsibility of the student.
Library Rules
Students should be encouraged to be responsible for articles of clothing and personal belongings. Please put name tags on all articles of clothing and supplies. Parents and students are encouraged to check the lost and found collection (located at the Northwest entrance to the cafeteria) for items lost at school. These unclaimed items are given periodically to charity.
Students that arrive late or students that are taken out of school for professional health care visits and returned to school on the same day, should present the school office with a note stating date, kind of doctor, and time of visit. Parents must sign the student back in the school office when returning. By following this procedure, the student will not be counted absent for that particular day. Please note: this is for a student that goes to a doctor and attends or resumes classes all in the same day.
Realizing that education is the bridge connecting the present to the future, the faculty and staff of Parkway Elementary strive to ensure a well balanced curriculum that incorporates basic skills, educational innovations, technology, and problem solving strategies, thereby developing successful students with high expectations and positive self esteem.
We will ensure a school climate where:
No qualified handicapped student shall, on the basis of
handicap, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or
otherwise be subjected to discrimination under any District program or activity,
if any part of its programs and activities receive federal financial assistance
29 U.S.C. 794; 34 CFR 104.4(a)

Each year PTA provides for two parties during the year. These parties are Christmas and Valentines. The parties are under the direction of the individual teacher. Each class has a Room Mom who will work with the teacher to provide these parties.
There will be no in-class birthday
parties at any grade level. Birthday party invitations may be distributed
at school, as long as every child in the class receives one. All other
holiday events must be approved by the principal.

Personal Property
Students are responsible for their own personal property. They are cautioned not to bring large amounts of money, radios, toys, tape players, skateboards, and other valuable items to school. Eye glasses and watches need to be kept track of at all times and not lent to other students under any circumstances.
Personal items and/or money are not to be brought to school for buying, selling and/or trading purposes. Any personal items brought to school which interfere with instructional activities are subject to being held by the teacher/principal until a parent can retrieve them.
Bikes may be ridden to school, but we must insist that they be parked and locked in the racks in the front of the building. Do not ride skateboards or roller blades to school.
The Lewisville Independent School District is required by the Texas Structural Pest Control Board and the Texas Department of Health to notify you of the following:
This school periodically applies pesticides. Information concerning these applications may be obtained from Sam Russell at 972-539-1551.
Any school personnel that make application on a routine basis of any pesticides, insecticides or herbicides at a school or on school property must be either a licensed non-commercial applicator or a technician. The Texas Structural Pest Control Board will be reviewing the setting standards in the near future for the technician category in non-commercial. Technicians must work under direct supervision of the non-commercial certified applicator.
A notification of pest control treatment must be posted at least 48 hours in advance. The purpose of the notice is to inform employees and faculty that a pest control treatment will be done. Also, a consumer information sheet must be provided to any employee upon request. Students may not re-enter a treated area for at least 12 hours following treatment. These re-entry restrictions apply to normal academic and extracurricular activities.
All pest control use records shall be maintained on the employer's premises for two years. The records must include the name and address of customer (supervisor), name of pesticides or devices used, amounts of pesticides or devices used, percent in solution of pesticides used, purpose for which the pesticides or devices were used (school campus). The records must be made available to an employee of the Structural Pest Control Board upon request.
A progress report will be sent to the parent or guardian of any student whose grade is below 70 midway through the six week grading period. The report needs to be signed and returned to the teacher. Tutorials will be available to students who are failing a subject beginning with the fourth week of school.
Students may be promoted from one grade level to the next only on the basis of academic achievement. A student shall attain an overall average of 70 or above for the year which is derived by averaging the final numerical grade for language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. In addition, a student shall attain an average of 70 or above in language arts and mathematics.

Every student is requested to have a three-ring binder with pocket folders inside (number varies according to grade). It is recommended that students purchase GO-binders provided by the PTA. They are our school colors with the Panther logo. It is believed that this will enhance school identity and spirit.
The purpose of the go-binder ('G' stands for getting and 'O' for organized) is simply to help students (as the letters suggest) get and remain organized. The teachers will review study skills that will help students to always be prepared and to help parents stay informed.
If you arrive after 8:00 a.m., your parent MUST come in with you to sign you in. A student with three or more tardies per six weeks will be referred to the principal's office, and the parents will be contacted. Tardies are considered acts of truancy and, unfortunately, it may be necessary for the school to file charges with the legal authorities if such tardies are persistent. Students who come in after second period (10:00 a.m.) are counted absent.
So as not to disturb the learning situation in our classrooms, we ask that you please sign in at the office before entering the classroom area. In addition, please wear one of the identification badges provided in the office.
Parents should come by the school office at least 3-5 days in advance of their intent to withdraw their child. A withdrawal permission form must be filled out by a parent. Prior notice will provide time for the necessary dismissal forms to be completed.
