Instructional Programs

Prekindergarten—A three-hour prekindergarten program is available for children who meet State eligibility. Classes are held from 8:00-11:00 a.m. and 12:15-3:15 p.m. The program uses the State Prekindergarten Guidelines as the basis for its curriculum. Through the use of literature and hands-on activities, children learn about language, math, science, social skills, health, safety, fine arts and technology.

Bilingual Classes build on the children’s strength in their first language (Spanish), while developing English as a Second Language. About 80% of the instruction is in Spanish; 20% in English during the prekindergarten year. In higher grades, students in the LISD Bilingual Program receive increasing amounts of English instruction each year.

English as a Second Language Classes emphasize oral language development in English. Children have many opportunities to listen and use English in daily activities.

Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD)— At Lillie J. Jackson, children are generally served in co-teach classes. In these classes, children with disabilities are educated in the same class with typically developing children. The class is co-taught by a special education teacher and a prekinderarten teacher. Classes generally have 16-20 children, with 3-5 of those children having identified disabilities.

Families with concerns about three and four year olds not yet enrolled in LISD should contact the LISD Special Education office 972-436-4711 to learn more about screening for disabilities or transferring services from a prior district.
