SPEECH

Ms. Jennifer Carrera
Speech – Language Pathologist

So, what exactly is speech and language therapy?

“Speech,” as it is called for ‘short’, is actually a therapy service provided for eligible students with educational needs in the areas of articulation, language, voice and/or fluency.

The Speech - Language Pathologist (SLP) works closely with teachers and parents in order to diagnose and provide intervention services that are individualized to each child. In Lewisville ISD, our goal is to help those children whose speech or language interferes with their ability to function in a school environment.

What is a Speech – Language Pathologist?

A Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) is a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of communication disorders.  In Canada and the United States, a university degree at the Master's level is the recognized standard of education.

Other requirements are 300 to 375 hours of supervised clinical experience, a passing score on a national examination, and 9 months of supervised postgraduate professional clinical experience. Texas has continuing education requirements for licensure renewal as well.

What do I do if I suspect my child may be in need of services?

Discuss your concerns with the classroom teacher.  If the child’s academics are being affected, further speech and/or language evaluation may be warranted.  Please feel free to contact me with further questions/concerns.
