Second Grade
| The goal of the second grade teacher is to provide
a positive challenging environment where each child learns to
take risks while exploring their world. They build on the fundamental
skills learned in the first grade. There is an emphasis on learning
responsibility and appropriate life skills for success. |
Language Arts
The second grade language arts curriculum encompasses:
reading, English and phonics, written language and oral language.
To enhance reading we use a varity of instructional and learning strategies
such as: guided reading, reading buddies, literature response, journal
writing, independent reading, D.E.A.R. time, performing plays, exploring
different genres, book reports and small group shares. English provides
the students with instructions on basic mechanics, spelling(including phonetic
phonemes which go along with weekly skills that are taught), and composition.
Written language provides the students with consistent opportunities to
create stories and express their ideas.
Our oral language program is designed to build self-confidence, respect
and an awareness of proper communication along with active listening and
speaking skills. |
Math
| Our goal is to make math instruction exciting
and engaging. We take a hands on approach to exploring the challenges
of mathematics.
Second grade learning skills include: operations and computation,
patterns, measurement, graphing, probability, fractions, place
value, problem solving and higher level thinking skills. |
Science
| In second grade all students will be exposed to
the beginnings of science. The purpose is to build a level of
interest in our second graders. Students begin to actively manipulate
and explore their environment with hands-on lessons. The science
topics that we study are meaningful to the students. The second
grade curriculum units include: Sciences Processes, Safety & Measurement, Matter in the World Around Us, Weather: Patterns of Change, Our Planet Earth, Animals. |
Social Studies
The purpose of social studies instruction is to
develop knowledgeable citizens who are able to function effectively
as members of local, state, national, and international communities.
Eight strands, or disciplines, comprise elementary social studies.
They are:
- History
- Geography
- Economics
- Government
- Citizenship
- Cultures
- Science, technology, and society
- Social studies skills
Units were designed to integrate these strands.
In second grade, concrete experiences and activities build
an important foundation upon which later learning will be built.
Cooperative learning activities provide opportunities for students
to develop group skills needed to function as a member of a
problem-solving team. A variety of rich, motivating resources
such as literature, music, poetry and art, as well as museums
and historical sites enrich instruction and make social studies
come to life for second graders.
Units of study are titled:
- Where We Live
- Earth, Our Home
- People and Places in History
- Our Country Long Ago
- Our Country Today
- Working Together
