Understandings:  Students will understand that-
*  Differences between people or groups may become so severe that they are very difficult to resolve.
*  Literature has an effect on people's atitude and belilefs and can spark conflict.
*  Sectional differences between the North and Sourth deepened during the early and mid-1800s.
*  The spread of slavery to the territories became a focus for sectinal tensions and congressional attempst at compromise.
*  Lincoln's speeches, such as Gettysburg Address, first Inaugural Address, Second Inaugural Address, and the Emancipation Proclamation, had a great effect on the attitudes of Americans.
*  The failure of compromise led to the secession of the southern states and the beginning of the Civil War.

Essential Questions:
1. What will it take to split our nation in two?
2.  Does the failure of compromise always lead to more conflict?
3.   What issue would prompt you to take up arms?
4.  In any  contest, will the strongest side always win?
5.  What would it take to make amends within a country that is in adversity?
