HMS 8th Grade History - Colonial Travel Brochure


Today you will create a three column colonial travel brochure for the colony that you have been assigned. You may use any of the word processing features you have learned within the guidelines below. If you can't figure out what to do, reread these instructions and try again, use Help or quietly ask the person next to you. If you are still lost, raise your hand to get a teacher's help.

Setting Up Your Brochure

  1. Start Microsoft Word.
  2. Save your file as BROCHURE-lastnamef in your folder on the file server.
  3. Click on View|Page (or Print) Layout.
  4. Choose View|Header and Footer... to access the Header area.
  5. Type your first and last name, your teacher's name, and the class period.
  6. Example: George Jetson, Mr. Himel, Period 3
  7. Center your heading by highlighting the words and then clicking on the center tool
  8. Click on Close in the Header and Footer dialog.
  9. Your header should appear in grey. IF YOU CAN'T SEE YOUR HEADER, choose View|Page or Print Layout to see your header with the rest of what you type.
  10. Click on File|Page Setup.
  11. Set your Page or Paper Size - Orientation as follows:
  12. Click on the Margins tab and set your margins as seen below:
  13. Click on Format|Columns and set up your columns as below:
  14. Change your zoom factor to 100%.
  15. Save your file.

The following list describes the word processing requirements for your pamphlet.

  1. All fonts used must be readable.
  2. You will use bold, italics, and underlining as appropriate.
  3. You will create centered, underlined column titles between 14 and 24 pts.
  4. All paragraphs must be left aligned or justified, indented with a single tab, and use a font between 10 and 14 pts.
  5. When you complete the work on a column you should use Insert|Break, Insert - Column Break to force your cursor to the top of the next column. DO NOT USE THE SPACE BAR OR ENTER KEY TO MOVE TO THE TOP OF THE NEXT COLUMN.
  6. You must add at least three pieces of clip art to your brochure. To insert pictures into your word processing file, click here.
  7. The overall appearance of your brochure should be pleasing to the eye and persuasive to the reader.
  8. Save your file often.

Call a teacher to check your work... You will be allowed to print, after a teacher has approved your final draft.
