HMS 8th Grade History - Colonial Letters
Project
In this lesson, you will create a letter home from the colony you are now
living in. You
will use your word processing software, Microsoft Word to do this. Your letter
must contain 3 pieces of clip art that is representative of your colony.
- Start Microsoft Word.
Saving your file.
- Save your file as COLONY-lastnamef in your folder on the
network server. Remember to use File|Save
As...
Setting up your header.
- Click on View|Page (or Print) Layout.
- Choose View|Header and Footer... to access the Header
area.
- Type your first and last name, your teacher's name, and the
class period.
Example: George Jetson, Mr. Otis, Period 3
- Center your heading by highlighting the words and then
clicking on the center tool
.
- Click on Close in the Header and Footer dialog.
- Your header should appear in grey. IF YOU CAN'T SEE YOUR HEADER, choose View|Page
or Print Layout to see your header with the rest of what you type.
Rules for typing your letters.
- You must use a READABLE font for all work. Titles should use
between 14 and 18 point and paragraphs should use between 10
and 14 point fonts. Use Bold and Italics only as needed
to provide emphasis.
- To indent, press the Tab key one time at the beginning of each paragraph.
- DO NOT press the Enter key until you have completed a
paragraph.
- Type one space only after all words and punctuation marks.
- When typing punctuation, the mark should come immediately after the
word followed by one space and the next word.
For example, this sentence
demonstrates the use of one space after punctuation marks.
- Use good typing posture with your hands on the home row keys.
To add clip art.
- You must add at least three pieces of clip art to your
brochure. To

- Remember, your clip art must be representative of
your colony.
