The Accelerated Reader program was purchased with money allotted by LISD to grade levels to enhance our reading program. Our PTA joined in after seeing that this program is a way for parents to participate in their child's reading experience. Our PTA is now maintaining and purchasing prizes, tests, and books.

It is not our main reading program but a component that encourages children and parents to choose and read books at the child's independent reading level. It is often difficult for children and parents to choose appropriate books. The teacher uses the STAR test, this is a vocabulary based test which assesses the students vocabulary and assigns an independent level. If the child practices reading this level they should gain fluency and vocabulary which will make them a better reader. The comprehension test focuses on the main idea and details or the " Who, Did what, Where, When, and Why" of the story.

The children who participate are excited about reading and earning points and getting prizes!!! The teachers are excited because it is a sneaky way to get children reading. At the end of the year we have a school wide assembly to honor the top readers in the school and grade levels with trophies or certificates.
