Dear 5th Graders,
Welcome to my class! Many of you I know already. Others I will get to know very soon. You are in for a fun and exciting year. I know that you are eager to
learn and to experience all of the wonderful privileges of being in fifth
grade. Many things are in store for you including mini-society in the
fall and camp 89’er in the spring. |
| Please talk to me when you have something to share, when
you don’t understand, or when you are upset. I will try to listen
carefully.
If we work together as a team we will have a successful and memorable year! Sincerely, Mrs. Fesenbek |

Student Responsibilities And General Classroom Information |
| Day Planner and Citizenship Notebook • Each student is responsible for bringing his/her notebook to class everyday. There will be a logical consequence for not bringing the notebook to class. Students are also responsible for keeping the notebook in good condition (it has to last all year). • The students will record all daily assignments in this notebook. Homework assignments and unfinished work must be highlighted at the end of the day. There will be a logical consequence for not keeping an accurate record of the daily assignments. • Behavior concerns will be recorded on the citizenship report form located on the back of each weekly assignment sheet. When a student receives a mark or notice on this form there will be a logical consequence (time served walking during recess, study hall, office referral, phone call home, etc.) PARENTS: Please reinforce school discipline at home. We have to work together! |
| HEADINGS Any work completed on notebook paper must have full heading. Five points will be deducted from any assignment that does not have a complete heading. |
| CURSIVE The students are expected to complete all work in cursive handwriting. This excludes math assignments, notes, rough drafts, and pre-tests. Five points will be deducted from assignments not completed in cursive. |
LATE WORK Any work that has not been completed by the stated due date will lose 30 points (making the highest possible grade a 70). If the student forgets to turn in a completed assignment (the teacher has to ask you for it), five points will be deducted from the final grade. |
| ACCELERATED READER • Each student will take the S.T.A.R. test during the first few weeks of school. The student will then be given a reading level. The students are responsible for reading (at least) two A.R. books within their reading level each six weeks. • A.R. reading averages will be taken each six weeks. The reading average for the six weeks will be doubled and recorded as a reading grade in the grade book. • The students will be given assigned A.R. reading time on Fridays. They may also read their A.R. books during the school day when all other work has been completed. The majority of the A.R. reading is expected to be completed at home. |
| SNACK BREAK Students are encouraged to bring a nutritious snack to eat daily after specials. Candy and other sugar-rich “snacks” should be left at home! |
WATER BOTTLES |
| LUNCH The students will have assigned seats during lunch time. Parents who join their child for lunch during this time may sit across from their child, or in another designated area. We do not allow other fifth grade students to join another student and their visiting parent during lunch. |
| PHONE Students will only be given permission to use the classroom phone in urgent situations. They may not use the phone to ask parents to retrieve forgotten homework, projects, or supplies. |
| TUTORIALS Tutoring will be offered to students who are earning less than a 70% average in any content area. Tutoring will also be offered to those students who need extra help on an “as needed” basis. |
| PLAGIARISM Students will not receive credit (0) for work that is copied directly from another source such as an encyclopedia, book, periodical, or internet site. This includes: cutting/pasting from the web. The students must summarize material using their own words. |
| PROGRESS REPORTS Progress reports will be sent home only to those students who are in danger of failing. They will be sent home after the third week in a grading period. Parents may contact me at any time during a grading period regarding student averages. |
| ATTENDANCE • Students may not arrive at school prior to 7:30 A.M. • Fifth graders report to the gym between 7:30 and 7:45 A.M. A teacher will be on duty during these times. • Any student who has not reported to class by 8:00 A.M. will be considered tardy. • Parents will need to notify me in writing regarding student absences or early-dismissals. |
| NEWSLETTERS I send home a weekly newsletter (Fesenbek’s Frontier News) on the last day of each school week. Important information concerning tests, projects, and events will be included in the newsletter. Students and their parents are asked to read the newsletter each week. |
