Join PTA Today!

It's Never Too Late
to Join PTA!
Please consider joining - YOUR membership in PTA is what provides the many important programs and services to ALL of our students, parents, and teachers. Plans for this year include: Aim for Success, 180 Degrees, Teacher Wish List program, Reflections, Destination Imagination, school dances, book fairs and many other events and programs.

You can become a member of FMS PTA by simply paying $10.00 dues per person, or through a donation of $40.00 which includes two memberships and eliminates the need for further PTA fundraisers. Because PTA does not do fundraisers, we depend on our membership dues to provide our many programs. To join, please fill out the form which can be obtained in the school office or on the school website by clicking here, attach a check made payable to FMS PTA, and drop it in the PTA box in the school's front office.

If you are unsure of your membership status for this year, please email

From the Principal's Desk

180 degreesAs we conclude the second six-week grading period, the students of Forestwood Middle School continue to make all of us proud with their academic and extracurricular achievements.  On Friday, November 20th you will receive your child's report card and during the week of November 30th we will take time out of the Advisory period to congratulate students who have achieved the "A" Honor Roll, "A/B" Honor Roll, and received the recommendation for Falcon Fiesta.  It is our hope that this celebration not only recognizes those who have achieved exemplary performance but also encourages others to take the necessary steps to be recognized in the future.

Building on the record of incredible success for Forestwood, the Texas Education Agency announced the schools that would receive the Gold Performance Acknowledgement based on the 2008 - 2009 TAKS test scores.  The purpose of this recognition is to spotlight schools that have significant numbers of students in the "commended" category of performance.  We will be recognized for our attendance rate and the percentages of students achieving commended status in reading, math, writing, science and social studies.  In addition we will receive Gold Performance Acknowledgement for achieving comparable improvement in the area of mathematics.  It is clear there is a tradition of excellence at Forestwood that is alive and prospering!

This year is a textbook adoption year for English Language Arts and Reading.  Lewisville I.S.D. will be adopting the literature book this year and the English book next year.  As part of the adoption process, the district has set aside the week of January 4th for our Textbook Adoption Public Viewing (January 4th - 8th).  The viewing will be held at the Bolin Administration Center, Room D, between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.  The public may review the textbooks and ancillary materials and provide feedback during this week.  Feedback will then be shared with the Textbook Adoption Committee.  We encourage your involvement!

Some quick calendar notes;

  • Thanksgiving Break will begin Monday, November 23rd and continue for the entire week  Friday, November 20th is a full day of school.
  • Classes will conclude prior to the Winter Break on Friday, December 18th with an early dismissal scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on the dot.  Regular bus routes will be run at that time and we ask that all other transportation be arranged so every one may leave campus at 12:30 to begin the Winter Holiday.
  • Classes will resume on Monday, January 4th at 8:45 a.m. as usual.
  • The first semester will conclude with exams on Tuesday, January 12th, Wednesday, January 13th and Thursday, January 14th.  The 14th will also be an early dismissal day and the same procedures will be followed; we ask that all transportation be arranged so every one may leave campus at 12:30.
  • The 15th and 18th of January will be student holidays, with classes resuming on Tuesday, January 19th, 2009.

The previous paragraph brings to mind the fast approaching holiday season.  Listen for opportunities for you and your child to come to the aid of the less fortunate with holiday toy drives and the "Christmas Angel" program sponsored by Communities in Schools of North Texas.  Both of these efforts are focused on families within L.I.S.D. who find themselves struggling to make ends meet.  Each of these events underscores our effort to educate the whole child and emphasize the responsibility we all have toward our fellow man.  We thank you in advance for anything you might be able to do to assist us in the endeavor.

Finally, thank you for your continued support of Forestwood Middle School.  Words do not adequately state our gratitude for the support our parents provide the school, not only through assisting in the education of our students, but the incredible number of volunteer hours in the library, office, teacher workroom, dances, trips, and on and on . . .  As always, do not hesitate to call or come in to the school office with any questions or concerns; we are all here to serve the best interests of our students.  We wish each student and family a safe and peaceful holiday season!

David Tickner
Principal

From the PTA President

180 degreesDear Forestwood Parents and Students,

Our fall semester is off to a great start.  PTA has been very busy this year with many events, such as Book Fair, our first school dance, Falcon Fiesta, and student programs AIM for Success and 180 Degrees.  I would like to thank all of our parent volunteers for making these events so successful.  We are looking forward to an exciting spring semester as well.

I would like to remind everyone that we are Community Partners with Kroger and Tom Thumb.  Please take a moment if you have not already done so and link your Kroger Plus Card or Tom Thumb Reward Card to Forestwood PTA so that we might share in their profits.
Click here for the form needed to link your Kroger card to the PTA (only needs to be done once).  The number assigned to PTA from Tom Thumb is #7187.  I would like to thank both Kroger and Tom Thumb for their support of our school.

I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels during our upcoming holiday season.

State of the District

dr royPresentation by Dr. Roy, Superintendent of Schools for LISD

Please join us at Forestwood Middle School on Tuesday, December 1st at 7pm for a very important presentation given by our superintendent, Dr. Roy.  The Forestwood Orchestra will perform beginning at 6:30 as people enter for the meeting; they will conclude with the Star Spangled Banner at 7pm, after which the presentation will begin.

The information presented is intended to educate the community on the district's financial situation, explain in detail the options and respond to questions.  A recent news article indicated the Board is moving in the direction of asking for a property tax hike; this would be an opportunity to get the details up close and personal.

The meeting is open to all.  See you there!

Science Olympiad

180 degreesPre-AP Science students will participate in Forestwood's Science Olympiad on Tues., Nov. 17. The competition will run from 8:45 till 11 am.

Students will compete in two events - in the Do-it-There, students compete in teams of 2 and are given materials to build an object that must perform a specific task. The object with the best performance wins. The students do not know what the object, task, or materials are before the competition.

The second event is the Write-it-Do-it. Teams of 3 consist of one writer and two builders. The writers have 30 minutes to write instructions on how to build a model. The builders must then build the model from the writer's instructions. The top 3 teams from each event and grade level will participate in the District Science Olympiad on Dec. 5 at Durham MS.

Good luck to all!

Christmas Angel Program

180 degreesGiving in the Spirit of the Season!

Forestwood is proud to welcome back our annual
Christmas Angel Program.  We are continuing our tradition of providing for families at Delay, Hedrick, and here at Forestwood.  Last year we were able to provide Christmas presents for 62 total students.  We are hoping for an even bigger number this year!  Student Council and NJHS members are working together to coordinate fundraising from the student body.  Faculty and staff are participating with monetary donations which will all be used to purchase gifts according to the wishes of the angels. We invite you, our community, to participate as well.  If you are interested in making a donation, please contact Julie Walton (waltonjd@lisd.net) or Jennifer Bradley (bradleyjc@lisd.net).

Thanks in advance to making this another successful Holiday Season!

Live Green!

180 degreesEnvironmental and Recycling Tips

Did you know....

You cannot recycle plastic bottle caps with ordinary recycling.  If you put the caps back onto bottles, the bottles may be thrown away instead of recycled.

Recycling just one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a television set for three hours.

American families spend more on trash bags in one year than families in developing nations earn in a year.

If every American recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, we would save about 25,000,000 trees a year.

The amount of household garbage in the US generally increases by 25 percent during the holiday months, from 4 million to 5 millions tons per week.

Home Depot and IKEA recycle CFL light bulbs.

If you must use disposable, think about paper plates, they will safely biodegrade.

Unplug your electronic chargers when not in use.  Many electronic devices drain electricity even when not in use.

Glass can be recycled an infinite number of times.

Doing laundry in cold water cuts energy usage by 80%.

Plastic numbers 1,2,3 are usually the most easily recycled.  Plastic 4 can be taken to grocery store drop off points.  #5 is used in bottle caps and drinking straws.  Some centers will not take these.  #6 is polystyrene - packing peanuts and Styrofoam.  This is not easily recyclable.  Consider taking your own containers to restaurants to use for leftovers.  Take your own cup to your favorite coffee shop.  Some will give a small discount.  #7 is a blend of plastics.

The cities of Lewisville and Flower Mound accept Plastics # 1-7, except styrofoam and plastic bags.  Many retail and grocery stores accept plastic newspaper and grocery bags.

Bowling for Scholars

bowling colorIt's time to start thinking about the annual Bowling for Scholars Tournament being held Saturday, January 30.  This will be the sixth annual scholarship fundraiser for LISD Council of PTAs and we need you there to keep the successful tradition going!

Each year the Council awards two $500 scholarships to graduating seniors at each LISD high school. Without your support, these scholarships are not possible, so mark your calendar for January 30, 2010 and start recruiting your team now - don't forget to include the kids!  (Junior Division ages 6-12)

Registration fees are $25 per adult/$20 per junior with 4-person teams. This includes 3 games, shoe rental, and a Bowling for Scholars t-shirt. Three shifts of games will be available:  9 - 11 am; 11:30 am - 1:30 pm & 2 - 4 pm.

Recognition will be given to the top teams, school with the most teams, best team name, worst score etc.

The registration form will be available on the council website.  Contact
bowling4scholars@lisdpta.org with questions.
