From the Principal's Desk . . .
The students of Forestwood continue to make all of us proud in both their academic work and extracurricular activities. The remaining twelve weeks of the school year bring with them numerous culminating activities including the completion of a year's worth of course work, the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, the district UIL academic competition, and a number of athletic, musical and theatrical events designed to conclude the work of a school year. We all have grown accustomed to expect great achievements and no doubt we will see more of what has become routine. Regardless of the final measures in terms of scores or ratings, it is the level of commitment, hard work, and sincerity with which our students take on every activity that is the most important and of which we are most proud!
We all know well that technology makes our world go around, and at times when changes occur in technology, the world seems to come to a screeching halt! Lewisville Independent School District is about to take such a step by upgrading all district computers from Microsoft Office 2003 to Office 2007. In addition, our email software will migrate to Outlook 2007. This change will take place at Forestwood in late April. How will this affect those of you outside the school? In two ways: first, we ask your patience with email as we learn the new system and contend with the inevitable "bugs;" second, any families that have Office 2003 at home could experience difficulties opening documents your children work on at school and take home to complete. Our Technology Facilitator on campus, Mustafa Kucuk, has set up a link on the Forestwood website to assist with opening Word 2007, Excel 2007, and PowerPoint 2007 files with earlier versions of Office. From our home page, click on the Technology link on the left hand side of the page, and on the Technology page you will see an Office 2007 logo; click on that and your problems will be solved. Mr. Kucuk and Mrs. Ross (Technology Applications instructor) are willing to answer questions and assist during this transition period; please feel free to call. Click here to jump directly to the technology page.
The spring of each year brings with it a focus on our accountability rating and the annual state assessment tests. Our staff has implemented a comprehensive plan for the preparation of our students for even greater successes than we have experienced to date. After establishing the campus goal of achieving an "exemplary" rating, we have identified student needs in the area of test preparation and will be addressing those needs in special assistance sessions in addition to our work in the regular classroom setting. We intend to not only experience improvement in the overall numbers of students who pass the test; we are planning to increase the number of students who are recognized for "commended" performance. Teachers will be working with students during the Teaming period, and in before and after school sessions. We ask that if your child is talking about being invited to one of these activities that you urge them to attend and take advantage of their teacher's efforts. With your support we will be able to ensure that test day is an opportunity for your children to shine and experience the successes and associated recognition they so richly deserve. By now the 7th grade writing and 8th grade reading TAKS tests have already been completed. More TAKS tests are scheduled for April 7th (8th grade math) and the week of April 27th for 6th and 7th grade math and reading as well as 8th grade social studies and science. Please help us make sure our students are well prepared, well rested, and ready to "make their mark." It is important to note that lunch times will change on these days and we also request that doctor's appointments, etc. not be scheduled for this week if at all possible.
This time of year not only includes culminating activities, but also preparation for the upcoming school year. Very soon your students will want to discuss course selections for the 2009 - 2010 school year and will be presenting registration forms for the new school year. Please feel free to contact our counselors or an administrator with any questions or concerns related to the preparations for next year.
As with every edition of this newsletter it is imperative that we once again thank the parents for their support; we are grateful. Please do not hesitate to make contact with your child's teachers, the counselors or an administrator if you are in need of information, support or assistance; we are here for that purpose and we welcome your involvement.

Falcon Fiesta
The third Falcon Fiesta of the school year was held on Friday, January 30th. The students really seemed to enjoy the opportunity to have a few snacks and socialize with their friends. The next Falcon Fiesta is scheduled for Friday, March 13th. Following that there will be one more this school year. The last Fiesta is scheduled for Friday, May 8th.
Falcon Fiesta is a PTA sponsored student recognition and reward program during which selected students have an opportunity to attend a short reception in their honor. Every six week grading period a group of ten students from each grade level is chosen by their teachers to be served soda, snacks and deserts. The selection criteria are based upon positive attitude toward school work, consistent effort, excellent behavior, hard work, and attention is given to those who may have shown significant improvement. This is a reward every student has an opportunity to attain and should work toward. Go for it Falcons and make it hard for the teachers to choose!
If you would like to help by donating snacks for one or more of the Fiestas, and are not already on the Falcon Fiesta Volunteer list, please contact Melanie McCoy, (972) 355-9092 or JoMelKel@aol.com.

Science Olympiad Results
Forestwood MS held its Annual Science Olympiad on Friday, January 30, 2009. There were two separate competitions.
The "Do-It-There" portion of the Olympiad involved 2 person teams who had to create the tallest tower from 40 straws and only 1 meter of tape that could support a tennis ball at the top. These student engineers were challenged by their limited supplies and the 25 minute time limit.
The "Write-It-Do-It" competition required 3 person teams to show their skills as technical writers. The writer of the team was given 30 minutes to study a model on display and to write directions for assemblage. No illustrations or diagrams of any kind were allowed nor naming the model (ie. car, airplane, etc.) The remaining 2 team members received written instructions from their group's writer and all necessary materials to assemble the device. Students had 30 minutes to recreate the model by following their teammate's written instructions.
The results of the competition were as follows: Do-It-There Competition
6th grade 1st place Joseph Cooksey and Matt Tuggle 2nd place Andy Lee and Ian Lawrence 3rd place Zack Adkins and Mostafa Abu-Hijleh 7th grade 1st place Jacob Horton and Matt Snoddy 2nd place Brett Heller and Travis Driver 3rd place Robert Tipa and Thomas Tipa 8th grade 1st place Laura Pavlik and Jessica Falk 2nd place James Kuang and Kody Kimberlinn 3rd place Cole Epperson and Ben Hladky

Forestwood DI Teams are Fabulous!
On Saturday, March 7, Forestwood had two teams competing in the TVNC Regional Tournament. The Improv team placed 2nd, and the Structure team placed First and will advance to compete in the state tournament on April 4th. Great job!!
The Destination Imagination "A New Angle Challenge. . ."
This Challenge included a building aspect as well as a theatrical aspect. The building part of challenge includes building a two part structure out of balsa wood using only wood and glue. One end has to fit into a 3 inch circle and the other end has to fit over a 4 inch by 4 inch 3/4 inch tall block, making an hourglass shape. Each side has to be 3 3/4 inches tall and both together cannot be taller than 9 inches. Whew.... After that part is figured out, there is a skit, props, instant challenge and side trips. The theme for this team from the beginning was "ITS Classified". They have worked for 6 months developing a skit, props, costumes, and of course a structure! Their skit is a fantastic story about the accidental spy, James Blonde, who catches the bad guy (Adbay Uygay) who is trying to steal artist's talent. In the end, James Blonde saves the day and returns the talent to the artists who ultimately discover that the talent was switched - OOPS! So what is a side trip? Side trips are cool extra elements that aren't required. This team created fantastic side trips. The first is a mosaic backdrop portraying the great hall of the museum. This backdrop was created using discarded paint samples and other donated paper. The backdrop has been wired so that parts of the floor as well as several windows light up. Their second side trip is a bad guy costume that was created using over 10,000 discarded resistors (a resistor is a needle like metal element that is used in wiring to limit the voltage travelling through a circuit). Members on this team include: James Kuang, Jason Suess, Adonni Navarro, Austin Gridley, Samantha Price Nazer, Spencer Dertinger, and Katie Schliesing (Shadowridge).

A full listing of required immunizations will be published by LISD in the near future. It will also be posted to the Forestwood website as soon as it is available. Immunization Notices will be mailed after Spring Break for all current 6th graders who are missing these new immunizations. Free Immunizations will be provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield at our Health Fair. Be sure to bring the Immunization Notice you receive AND your child's immunization record.
Notice for Asthmatics
As of December 2008, the propellant for inhalers has changed and is not as forceful as the previous one. All inhalers must be primed more often. If not primed correctly your child may not receive the correct dose or any medicine. Children's Medical Center has provided a chart with guidelines on priming and use of inhalers - click here to see the information.
Have a fun and safe Spring Break!

Teen Court
Teen Court is a alternative, voluntary program which offers young offenders an opportunity to make restitution for an offense through community service, specialized classes, and jury service, allowing them to avoid fines and keep their record clear. Teens are brought before a jury of their peers, who sentence them to constructive community service and jury duty. This program seeks to deter teens from future unlawful behavior, while providing direct experience in the judiciary system and an understanding of their future role as a productive citizen.
Both Youth and Adult volunteer opportunities are available. Teen court holds an annual volunteer training session in August. For more information visit the Teen Court page on the Town of Flower Mound website.

Recycling Tips
LISD PTA Council
Did you know..?
- You can't recycle plastic
bottle caps with ordinary recycling? If you leave the plastic bottle caps on the
bottle, the whole bottle could be thrown out by the recycling company instead of
being recycled. So, please remove the caps before recycling your plastic
bottles.
- Recycling just one aluminum can save
enough energy to run a TV for 3 hours.
- American families spend more on trash bags
in one year than families in developing nations earn in a year.
- If every American recycled just one tenth
of their newspapers/fliers, we would save 25 million trees a year.
- Home Depot and IKEA recycle CFL bulbs, so
don't toss them in the garbage because they contain mercury.
- Unplug your electronic chargers when you
are not charging your device, many of them use electricity even when they are
not in use.
- Glass can be recycled an infinite number
of times.
- Buy a cloth grocery bag and use it. They
are a lot more comfortable to carry and they fit a lot of groceries. If you
purchase just 1 item from the store, tell the clerk you don't need a plastic bag
at all.
- Want to stop getting phone books left on
your doorstep? At YellowPagesGoesGreen.org
you can register to get your name and
address taken off the phone book delivery
lists.
