From the Principal's Desk

falcon roundDuring the first six weeks of the school year we have seen some very significant successes.  Students and teachers alike have been pouring their hearts out to make each day count.

Our primary foci, the students, have accomplished a great deal during the first part of the school year.  The first six-week grade reports revealed that our students are making the effort to take advantage of what we have to offer.  During the week of October 12th we went into the Advisory period for each grade level and recognized students who achieved "A" Honor Roll status, "A/B" Honor Roll status, and those who were selected by their teachers for a special recognition in our "Falcon Fiesta" program sponsored by the generosity of the PTA.  Selection of students for Falcon Fiesta is based on academic achievement reflective of a consistent and diligent work ethic, growth and/or improvement, participation in class, consistent completion of work, citizenship that reflects the student's efforts to put forth the best effort and follow the school's rules, and participation in extracurricular activities.

In addition, our athletic teams have experienced both success and heartbreak on the field of competition, however throughout each contest they have made us proud as they remained competitive and played with heart and determination.  If we are able to teach our athletes competitiveness, commitment, and team spirit, we have been able to make them winners regardless of the score.

Band, orchestra and choir have performed or are preparing their fall concerts as we write.   They are also preparing contest music, for which goals are set and the ground laid for our students to achieve great results.  Extracurricular organizations have been extremely active.  Student Council has held elections, conducted one dance and scheduled more throughout the year, and chosen additional members.  National Junior Honor Society is conducting a routine recycling program and will soon launch additional service projects.  The Cheerleaders have made us proud by setting a positive example with their exuberance at football games and pep rallies.  All of these organizations continue to represent the school well at public events.

As you well know we continue to keep an eye on the health of our students in regard to the flu and H1N1 viruses.  Hand washing, refraining from sharing foods and drinks are just a couple of simple measures that will help stave off illness.  If your child does become ill please be sure to contact the Attendance Office and our Nurse; keep the student home for twenty-four hours after the fever is normal without fever reducing medications.  The
Forestwood website and the LISD website contain information related to this topic; we will make direct contact as needed and, as always we welcome your questions in person.

Since the first day of school, our dedicated staff has been here to support, challenge, cajole, and otherwise encourage your children.  Day-in and day-out they work to mold our students into the future of our world.  It is the daily commitment of each of these talented people that makes the school function smoothly every day.  Together we will continue the traditions of excellence, success and growth that are at the core of the Forestwood Middle School mission.

PTA Meeting

Join us Thursday, October 22 at 6:45pm for the next regular PTA meeting!

From the PTA President

180 degreesForestwood Parents, Students and Staff,

I'd like to remind everyone that it's never too late to join PTA!  One goal of our PTA is to have one member for every child at Forestwood.  Your support of PTA with your membership, donations of snacks for events like dances and Falcon Fiesta and participation in events like Book Fair help make it possible for us to bring great programs to and sponsor other events at Forestwood.  The school and PTA also heavily depend upon your volunteer time.  Take a peek at our
volunteer form on the website and see if there is an area where you can help.

I also want to remind everyone that there are two great programs this month for 7th and 8th grade parents: 180 Degrees Sexual Abstinence Program has a preview night for 8th grade parents on October 19th at 7 p.m., and Aim for Success previews their program for 7th grade parents on October 22nd at 7 p.m.  There will be a PTA Meeting on Thursday, October 22nd at 6:45pm, immediately prior to the program.  These previews are available to all parents but we really hope to see many 7th and 8th grade parents so you will have an opportunity to hear valuable information about presentations your children will see later in the week.  Watch for permission slips being sent home later this week and available on our web page.

Don't forget that we are Community Partners with Kroger and Tom Thumb.  Please take a moment if you have not already done so and link your Kroger Plus card or Tom Thumb Reward Card to Forestwood PTA so that we might share in their profits.  There is a form for Kroger on the PTA page of the FMS website which must be taken in the first time you link it with your card.  The number assigned to PTA from Tom Thumb is #7187.  I would like to thank both Kroger and Tom Thumb for their support of our school.

It's Not Too Late to Join PTA!

The beginning of the school year is very busy and maybe you simply forgot to join PTA this year....

We still need you and it is not too late to join!  Please consider joining as YOUR membership in PTA is what provides the many important programs and services to ALL of our students, parents, and teachers. Plans for this year include: Aim for Success, 180 Degrees, Teacher Wish List program, Reflections, Destination Imagination, school dances, book fairs and many other events and programs.

You can become a member of FMS PTA by simply paying $10.00 dues per person, or through a donation of $40.00 which includes two memberships and eliminates the need for further PTA fundraisers. Because PTA does not do fundraisers, we depend on our membership dues to provide our many programs. To join, please fill out the form which can be obtained in the school office or on the school website by
clicking here, attach a check made payable to FMS PTA, and drop it in the PTA box in the school's front office.

If you are unsure of your membership status for this year, please email Cheryl Jackson at jackson.cd@verizon.net.

180 Degrees

180 degrees

A whole new way to think about sex... 180 Degrees is an abstinence education program that presents the startling reality of the consequences of premarital sex and the benefits of healthy relationships.  The student presentation will include: staggering statistics, how to set physical boundaries, and how to start over if necessary and make better sexual decisions.  This is NOT your typical sex education class - this is an interactive discussion that allows students to ask all the questions they never felt they could ask.   You know a lot has changed, and parents, you may just learn something that you never knew!  This presentation is created to turn our children's thinking about sex around a whole 180 degrees.  It's harder than ever to make good choices, but students can stand for purity and SAVE sex for marriage, but first they have to...

Aim for Success

180 degrees

We are pleased to announce a presentation called "AIM FOR SUCCESS" for our 7th grade students.  Aim for Success is a nationally acclaimed educational organization that promotes sexual abstinence until marriage.  This program addresses the health reasons for choosing sexual abstinence including pregnancy, STD's, and emotional scars.

The parent meeting includes a preview of the student program so you will know firsthand what the students will be seeing.  This program equips parents with the tools and medical information needed to communicate effectively with their children without embarrassment.  Parents learn how, when, and why to talk to their children (toddlers to teens) about sex.  Aim for Success believes parents should be their children's primary sex educators, but they have found that many parents don't know how to approach this critical subject.

Aim for Success is the largest provider of sexual abstinence programs in the United States. They present about 2500 programs each year.  Ninety percent of these programs are in public schools across the nation, reaching about 200,000 students and their parents each year.

Aim for Success has received local, state and national recognition for their work in public schools.

PARENT PREVIEW for 7th grade - come and learn more about the Aim for Success Abstinence Program.

Technology Recognition

tech awards pic

We've come a long way in technology from just a few short years ago, so I want
to acknowledge some people who have stepped up their game.

  • The "Technology Twizzler" award goes to a faculty member who has gone above and beyond what is expected in technology.  The first "Technology Twizzler" award goes to MUSTAFA KUCUK (not pictured).
  • Secondly, we're giving another "Technology Twizzler" award to the person who was the very first to submit their technology usage report. This award goes to ANGIE KEMP!

We're also going to start "showcasing" teachers who are integrating technology into their classrooms.  Each six weeks, we will award the "SILVER MOUSE AWARD" to one teacher who has shown improvements in integrating technology.  This first six weeks, we will be honoring two teachers.  They will each receive a certificate and a gift card.

  • The first "SILVER MOUSE AWARD" is going to a teacher who has made great strides in integrating technology in his classroom this year.  Congratulations to RANDY ROBERTS!
  • The second "SILVER MOUSE AWARD" is going to a teacher who has already been integrating technology into her classroom and continues to do so this year.  Congratulations to GISELE FRANKS!

We need volunteers to help with the fair and assist with the immunization clinics.  Please give me a call at 972/350-2712 or shoot me an email at

Seasonal and H1N1Flus
The flu season is already upon us.  Please take a moment to read the Denton County Health Department HINI Parent Letter.  If you child is ill with a fever, he/she MUST be fever free (less than 100 degrees), without the use of fever reducing medications, for 24 hours before returning to school.  And, please consider getting a flu shot.  We will offer free immunizations for children and low cost flu shots for adults at our craft fair on October 24th.

Immunizations Due in 2009-2010 and 2010-2011
Immunization reminders have been sent to parents of children whose Tdap booster is coming due through March 2010.  If your child has already received this booster, please send in a copy of that immunization.  If your child has not received this booster, consider getting it at the Health, Art & Craft Fair.

Parents of sixth graders please take a look at the new immunization requirements, on our website, for your child to enter the seventh grade.  You too, can take advantage of the Free Immunization Clinic at our Craft Fair in October.   When your child receives these immunizations please send me a copy.  Please consider getting it done before the end of this school year to avoid long lines at Orientation next August.
